Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - part a

Season Two opens with the team out in the field chasing a blowfish in a sports car. Just a normal night out then…. Each team member is present and all have a role to play, including Ianto.

Our first views of him show that he is no longer the wall flower. In fact, when they confront the Blowfish in the house, Owen orders him into the centre position. We still note his nervousness about killing, obviously that adrenaline rush that the others all have and he noted he didn’t in Countrycide still exists.

Also Ianto appears to have a magic gun. It can fire bullets without him pulling the trigger.

Actually nope, no magic gun, but Jack is back.

Note Ianto’s body language here, the shoulders drawn up, tensed and protective. He is also seemingly a little bit shocked that Jack has returned.

When we next see the team, they are all back in the Hub and interacting after the completion of a mission with Jack off to the side observing. It appears that although they all traveled back to the Hub together, that not much was said. The team appear to be doing their best to ignore Jack and show him that they work just fine without him.

Ianto here is listening to Gwen’s instructions as she co-ordinates the clean up operation. He makes suggestions and a joke and we see that he is comfortable around Gwen. He is pointedly ignoring Jack off to the side, not once glancing at him. Just like the rest of the team.

Here Ianto who has escaped down to the autopsy bay, has come back up at the confrontation between Gwen and Jack. He quietly asks the question “Are you going back to him.”

Jack then answers with “I came back for you.” He pauses while he waits for any kind of response from Ianto. Ianto’s eyeline flickers over Jack’s face but he does not look away and he also does not respond to Jack’s statement, which Jack then amends to include the rest of the team.

Every team member is slightly turned away from Jack or in a closed off stance ala Tosh, except Ianto who is in his non-threatening pose but turned slightly towards Jack.

Out in the field again, no longer left behind by the team. He is a fully integrated member. Jack is back making his statements and giving orders. Ianto stays silent throughout the exchanges but he does carefully watch Jack. Like always when the team walks away, it is Ianto who leaves last.

Interestingly enough, even though Ianto walks away last from the dead body, he is now walking next to Jack, on an equal footing as they head to the SUV.

“Whoa. That never beeps”

Ianto has knowledge of Jack’s wriststrap, above and beyond what the others know. When the image of Captain John appears, Ianto is looking already at where it should appear first.

He takes a step backwards in nervousness. Hands are in his pocket, just like normal around Jack. Ianto does share a glance with Owen when John refers to finding the body, showing that the two are no longer on an antagonistic footing.

He watches John’s image until towards the end of the message when he looks at Jack to see his reaction.

As Jack gets into the SUV Ianto, like Gwen and the others, moves towards Jack. As soon as Jack drives off, Ianto makes up his mind to go and get a taxi. The rest of the team are still caught up about complaining about Jack. The logistics man already has a plan and moves off straight away. He does not choose to follow Jack’s orders. It is the two quietest members of the team that are thinking clearly. Tosh can track him and Ianto is arranging for transport.

While in the Taxi, Ianto has separated himself from the other three. He sits opposite them. The team discusses what just happened and Ianto points out that Jack recognised him.

Ianto spends most of the time we see him in the cab watching the world move past outside, while the other three complain about Jack. While they complain he then adds that it is more “fun when he is around.” The rest of the team quickly agree with Ianto.

John then invites the team in to join them at the Bar. When Ianto first enters the room, Gwen is focused straight ahead at Jack and John, but Ianto covers to the left and right of her, before we can see in the background that he aims the gun forward and follows Gwen into the room and closer to the two men.

When John interjects that they “were partners.” He is looking directly at Ianto. Ianto then proves John’s suspicions right and shows a hint of jealously in the deepening of his voice and his eyes that flicker nervously as he asks “in what way?”

When Jack walks away from John Hart to stand opposite him, Ianto lowers his gun. The last to actually lower their gun, incidentally, is Owen. We also get reaction shots, words from Tosh, Owen and Gwen about the Time Agency and the wrist strap. The only one they don’t show a reaction from is Ianto… Ianto is also the only one whose body is facing towards Jack, apart from John Hart who Jack is standing directly in front of. Gwen is facing directly forward towards no one, with her head turned towards John, both Tosh and Owen are facing John.

Back at the Hub, the question is how they got there. Whose lap did John get to sit on? Or who got to sit in the boot?

The team positioning is interesting.

Owen retreats over to the far wall, arms crossed and a gun in obvious view. Tosh elevated on a landing with a gun drawn in view of John. Gwen on the next level down with a closed off body posture but the scanner pointed at John. Then we have Ianto, at Jack’s back and hiding the silver tray behind his back. The other three have in plain sight, initially, weapons or something to try and make John uncomfortable, show that they don’t trust him. But Ianto is the one that keeps his role hidden until the last possible moment.

When Jack hands him the guns, he looks at Jack.

After receiving the katana, Ianto points at John again, clearly disbelieving those are the only weapons on the man. Jack asks John for the rest of the weapons. Gwen then provides information from the scanner.

In the Conference Room, John is the only one seated. Ianto has continued his tradition of following on from Jack. Jack is standing so Ianto stands. The rest of the team is also standing to demonstrate physical intimidation over John.

At John’s flirting with Gwen, Ianto rolls his eyes to show that he is not impressed by this man. Gwen is the one who assigns who pairs with whom and she puts Jack and Ianto together. Ianto glances towards Jack but we cannot see the expression on his face.

Here ends part a, next up the office scene.
