Not sure if you want criticism or not, but I noticed just one typo:

In the sixth paragraph, it should be "sort."

She made a soft noise that reminded him of a laugh.

This is the sort of line I absolutely love.

Overall it's nice to see Fran with Grandpa Balthier <3. I would say the entire "where are they now" bit is unnecessary, because really the story is about Balthier and Fran. If something doesn't add to the main focus of the story, it doesn't really need to be there. I enjoyed it ^^

I like Fran's reminding him that's their retirement, not just his, to think of. Balthier's worrying about how gracefully he's aged seems very him, too.

Yeah, well... I still deny it. XP The leading man never dies!~ (or ages). I just kinda felt like toying with idea that he might maybe, possibly, get old.

And see, the nice thing is... since it's a video game, we can say he never ages!! I played the darn thing for a year and a half befor EI beat it, and he still doesn't look a day oper twenty-two!
