Fifth Fang

Dec 30, 2010 19:18

I killed my first target at 16.

[Legault isn't quite sure why he feels compelled to share this with the town, but it's been nagging at him ever since Christmas until he just has to start spilling his life story to whoever happens to be listening.]The Black Fang formed when I was young. We were so close; you couldn't have asked for a better family ( Read more... )

Initially the reason we killed was out of conscience. We brought down corrupted nobility and bandits, fancied ourselves righteous and necessary vigilantes. It was only after a man named Nergal entered our ranks that the Fang started to fall apart, attacking innocents as well as villains. I had to kill a woman who had injured herself taking down a mark... she was no longer able to work, but that was hardly something to be killed for. I left not long after that.

[He's not even thinking while he's talking, blurting out the first thing that comes to mind without any sort of control. His tone even sounds a little bit surprised.]

He was insane. He was using us to murder people with a strong life force, to fuel his own magic. He had to be at least a thousand years old... he was trying to bring dragons back to our world, presumably to fuel his need for quintessence. I joined a small army moving against him and we stopped him.

[He hesitates, shaking his head, though the other man obviously can't see.]

I don't know why I'm saying this. I can't not say it; I didn't decide to. It just came out.

There isn't one. It just came out.

Are you trying to impress me?

Hardly.

[read: yes...]

I was just under the impression that it was story time.

I guess if there's something you desperately have to unload, you can do so.

[He hasn't really talked to Legault before, but this particular topic kinda strikes close to home so he has to comment]

W-what brought all this one?

I don't know. I just... had to, for no apparent reason.

You think it might have had something to do with all this Christmas stuff the town is pulling?

...It could be. The letter I received said not to be greedy, and I was demanding information rather than objects. That seems sort of stupid though; I can't imagine how this would benefit our captors in any way.

[Molly takes this all in with a lock of vaguely horrified shock that a killer has been living in the same home as her. She recooperates, however, if only to ask]

You lived in the mountains?

I did, yes. Without the Fang I had no home, and I wasn't welcome in many places, for obvious reasons. So I found others, and we built a town out of some old ruins.

Good, I'm glad there are more interesting people here... although your story does border on cliche.

Not really something I can help. We probably could have been cast either as heroes or as villains depending on who was telling the story.

You're quite the melodramatic...
