The scene with Claude and Claire is lovely and adorable and painful in retrospective. (Scottish clan of the undead = total win. Love Sandra so much). Nice observation about Bennet feeling left out of his own family, since he's trying to keep a distance from Claire.
Beautifully written and thought-provoking. Can't wait for the rest!
P.S. Nice combination of icon&fic. Hee.

Oh, goody! All the things I was going for. :-)

I always feel it's important to do justice to Sandra, who is so much more interesting than most of the characters on the show! It's also a tribute to Ashley Crow that she's managed to generate so much with so little. (And I managed to sneak in a slight reference to 28 Days Later without even realizing it myself.)

Yeah - all my Bennet/Claude icons seem to be about that kind of penetration ;-). It's Bennet's way of saying "I love you." Apparently.

Oh, I know. Sandra is such an underrated character, and she really does deserve more fandom (and canon, for that matter) attention. Plus I adore the Sandra/Bennet relationship and find it to be the most interesting canon ship by far.

Bennet's a bit expressively challenged like that. I think it's a side-effect of 'morally grey'.

Not that there's actually much competition on this show, but definitely. Certainly the most interesting couple on TV right now, and I think it was probably unintentional on Kring's part, mostly generated from the actors. It just occurred to me that Kring also created Garret Macy and Jordan Cavanaugh on Crossing Jordan - a couple that wasn't a couple (but probably should have been), but were fascinating to watch interact, mostly because Jill Hennessy and Miguel Ferrer are both very good actors and had brilliant chemistry. I'm beginning to think he's a better instigator than leader.

That was lovely. I seriously can't wait for more. I love the disjointed style, though, at the moment, I mostly want to know what the hell's going on. *Grins* Superb!

It is. To some extent, this is the story of things he denied himself.
Can't wait for the rest!
Thanks! I hope to have part two up tomorrow.

Really enjoying this, and very intrigued about where it's going. You have so many lovely turns of phrase. I think my favourite was:
the sharp edge of a tongue that can melt into honey in the stutter of a heartbeat.
Looking forward to more!

I'm hoping to have the second part up later tonight. It's an unpredictable time of year!

Me, too. I had hopes for that plotline even before they said anything about it having been planned, simply because I have observed CE's chemistry with teenaged girls before. It's not always sexual (as with Kate Winslet and Billie Piper), but it can be very sweet, as with Nancy in Doctor Who or Sahira in Hearts and Minds.
the textures are very nice too.
Thank you! It's something I appreciate in others' writing and was endeavouring to bring. This story is...not quite a jigsaw puzzle, more like a tapestry, just a few threads here and there trying to tell a larger story.
Sandra/Claude? I have never even thought of this before. It's compelling and a bit scary at the same time.Well, I'm going to leave it very much up to the "eye of the beholder", but there's always something compellingly attractive about a man who's good with children. I think it's hard-wired, even with those of us who may not actually want children, like me! And with a distant husband, a charismatic young man who's good ( ... )

But yeah, I actually wrote a Claude and 3-year-old-Claire fic a long time ago (it's next in Lies to Live By. At the time I was bent on doing them in chronological order.), complete with invisible magic tricks ^^. The image was just too good to pass up. And I hadn't quite considered that but you're right: he is good with teenage girls. huh.
:D Eye of the beholder is good, and lots of fun in itself besides, anything that makes Bennet paranoid is entertaining
