So now we have fish. How did this come about, you ask? Well, let me tell you. Our charming and much loved nearly 8 year old son Thane, started asking for fish last fall. Since *I* didn't want fish, I said no. During Christmas shopping, while in a fog induced by too many hours spent breathing mall air I purchased a mini aquarium for him. I'm not ( Read more... )

Sean and I would both love to have fish! However, our cats are both over curious and under sensible, bringing a helpless fish into the house would just be cruel.

I feel that way about rodents of any kind. Our cats have shown zero interest in the fish or the tank however.

Gary update: Things are not looking good. He hasn't moved and doesn't react when his partly extended foot is poked...He isn't floating yet, but if he doesn't do "something" in the next day or two we will have to assume that he too is one of the dearly departed. (obviously we have no snail luck...)

I love fish. I've been wanting to get another tank for a while now(I gave mine to my Mom when I moved out here). Now I'm wondering if I should bother, I may be home in about a year so is there much point.

I've never gone the snail route, so I have no ideas.

snails are a pain in the butt to keep alive, they actually prefer a tank that has been left to get a bit icky. Sometimes just removing the insert from the filtration system for a day or so will be enough to jump start your snail.
A Pleco does a better job than a snail and if Thane tends to over feed a bit , a catfish is a great bottom feeder(if it is a tropical tank, gold fish will eat them).
Our cats was never a threat to the fish and we had up to 3 tanks at a time. Tegan, on the other hand, caught them with her bare hands.
