Geeky weekend so far. kyhwana is staying with us until he can get resettled in NZ. He's looking for computer/IT type work.

Yesterday we gave in and finally bought a GPS nav system for our car, a Navman iCN720. These are new in NZ, only just released and top of the line. Interestingly in the US and Europe stores they are already in run-out, being replaced ( Read more... )

GigE network saturation! YEEE!

Should bring the system down to T-COSY and show off :P Everyone will be sitting there going leechy leechy probably saturating out our gig backbone! Agh! Now that I have some more work I can hopefully get my RAID-5 up and going. It will own, so much.

You'll have to post later telling us how accurate the GPS thingy is. If it's anything like the ones in the UK it may send you the long way ;)

Let me know when you do. There was an incident highlighted on Top Gear, can't remember if it was website directions or a GPS but I think it was a GPS, where a supposed two mile journey routed them through france or something stupid like that.

There was an incident of a GPS unit misdirecting poor hammond on one show too.

I gave my parents my old Windows 2000 server as a desktop computer, it has three 9GB Ultrastar 18ES disks in RAID-5, on an AMI MegaRAID Express 200 (Ultra2 LVD SCSI) card. Gets about 60MB/sec reads and writes according to some benchmarks, pretty hard getting meaningful benchmark results for arrays since it depends on the kind of data access patterns you're using.
