People give me dirty looks when I pay cash (in your part of world and over here where I am) but that has never stopped me. I don't have 'plastic' and I'm proud of it. I pay cash and I don't spend more than what I have on me. Simple.
Just do what you must and ignore the dirty looks from the rest of the world. At least you know you would have saved money.
Go Rei! You have my full support! I've been thinking the same thing about my own life recently and I'm totally going to use you as inspiration to get my own butt in gear too. Even if we can't make sudden huge changes, small managable changes add up over time, right?
If you're ever feeling stressed and need an escape or a stern NO, you can always give me a call. My mom says the best way to stop a bad habit is to find a new good habit to replace it with and I'd be more than happy to let you put "visit Jennie" on your list of "things to do instead of spending money" ^_^
Seriously- if there's anything I can do to support- just let me know. I don't have as many resources as a library or the interwebs, but if there's anything I have that could be a useful "replacement stress reliever" like old movies or japanese text books or exercise equipment or anything like that you want to borrow- don't hesitate to ask.
Support from jersey here. Cash only is an excellent idea. (That's how I roll) If people give you a hard time, just laugh it off and be proud of yourself for making the decision to take control of your spending. :) I find that sometimes when I'm really tempted to spend money on something I don't need or shouldn't buy, dividing all my cash into sealed envelopes helps. I label them with "bills" "savings" "food" etc.. Then whatever is left over is what I can spend on "stuff". Sometimes nothing is left over, but since I sealed all the envelopes, I just have to deal. Best of luck! It'll be rough at first, but taking control is definitely doable. If you want to chat sometime, drop me a line on aim @ asuka0256.

In the meantime, GO YOU! I would award you a gold star right now, but I don't know how to change text color ...
