New Year Refection via meme
1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
I graduated with my PhD. (whoo!) And, though I claimed it last year, since we signed the papers at 12:01 on New Years Day in 2013, I'll say it again... Kate and I were legally married. Oh, and I moved to a city called "Normal" and I started a commuter marriage.

days
My days are up and down... When Kate is home, they are more up than down. And when she is gone, I struggle to make it through the day. Thursday was devastatingly difficult. My isolation was profound and I struggled to get through the day. Difficult days only seem to get darker. I went back on meds a few weeks ago. And, given the types of thoughts I ( Read more... ) -
Tuesday blues
Tuesday are my hardest day. Kate leaves around 4am and I wake up alone, knowing that for the next 3 days I'm essentially single. While in some ways I love the freedom to do what I want, when I want, and to not worry about anything but making sure the dog is okay, I find it hard to transition into that mentality. Distance is hard. I cried this morning when Kate left. My insecurities have been so high lately. And when she's here I just feel better. And this is just...hard.

Welcome to the Real World she said to me...
Yesterday was my first class as a "real prof". (I feel a lot like Pinocchio when he realizes he's a real boy.) The classes went well, though one class had some building issues and we had to conduct the second half of the class outside. Overall I know it went at least okay, perhaps even well. Life in a momentary nutshell
So much and so little all at the same time. Transition. A bit of crazy. A lot of contemplation. And a ton of travel. More unsettling factors than I've experienced in a awhile.
Traveling to and from Normal, IL often. Working out of coffee shops. Productivity is abysmal. (Like 30-40%). But enjoying the summer.
That is life in a nutshell.

Boston
I'm amazed how much I've been 'quietly impacted' by today's events at the Boston Marathon. The bombs went off within 4 blocks of where I used to live when I was at Berklee. While these events didn't "stop the world" the way 911 did, it stopped my world, 3000 miles away. I keep trying to see "exactly" where the bombs went off...trying to connect ( Read more... ) -
Adjusting to absence
It's harder without Kate. I thought I would be able to work a lot more but I'm really struggling. I have been able to get to the gym 5-6 days of the week. That is actually my only structure. (MWF 7-8:30am; TTh 4:30-6:30, and Sunday at 9am) I work out for an hour and then have time to shower, etc so it's a good chunk of time. I've actually been ( Read more... )
