Dear warkitty, here is a photo taken two years ago. It is horrid, and I don't look that bad any more. I have filled out in the face a little, not so hollow, but I sure do look a lot older (because I am!) than the 1998 photo. My gosh, that is 7 years ago. Seven remarkable years--the recent doc I saw for removing a problem, infected deep permanant stitch in my abdomen said, "Very few people would have survived what you've been through over the last four years." I told him I realized that. I was warned at Duke about the then-upcoming surgery that radically rearranged my internal architecture so I could eat orally again--"The first thing you must realize is that you may not survive the surgery itself." I found out later that more than one in five don't live through a procedure this complex--22% don't

Unload all you need to love, sometimes its good to voice our burdens. It does seem miraculous, but you're right we both know why you're still kicking. You don't get off your job that easy! I wonder what that job is right now...
