Science is essentially all about thousands of highly educated slaves serving the wishes of a chosen few. May be it's obvious to others, but it took me some time to realize this. No wonder so few engineers ever end up in science.

After a really dreadful week, where A was very sick, things got better. A made sure that I had a good birthday. I got some wonderful gifts this year. While anyone can buy you a gift, only a few people can make you feel special. A makes me feel special and I very much cherish that. S is taking up all our time and energy. I have no idea how single parents do it. A and I take care of S as a team, and we still feel completely drained. We don't get much help from our families (due to distance and various other factors), so we manage everything between the two of us. I had an emergency appendectomy 10 days ago. It was pretty infected, so the recovery has been slow. While this totally took us by surprise and messed up all our plans for 2 weeks, we have managed to weather the storm together. A has been my rock through this rough period ( Read more... )

I had a nice break-through in my work projects. This got me out of my work funk and allowed me to put things together nicely for my annual talk. It went well, I think. Yesterday was probably my best valentine's day experience ever. It was a full and lovely day. We took a very nice walk together in the park near downtown.
