I've really never liked this whole black Friday thing. :/ I'd rather spend $50 and tons of hours making things for people than $300 and an hour or so wrapping everything up. I mean, I do a small amount of shopping online like maybe on Etsy or something, or if there's something someone really wants I'll go to a big store for it, I don't care. I just ( Read more... )

My sister tried, even getting rid of TV pretty completely, but in the last year or so (when the kids turned 7 and 8) name brand stuff started showing up on their Christmas lists. And these are kids that are home schooled. Brick and Mortar school will influence them more.

If I'm not making gifts myself, I try to shop locally, and shop independent stores rather than big box sales.

If Evey wants brand name stuff that's fine, so long as she never gets greedy. I plan to involve her in making things for family and doing crafts so maybe she'll see that it's fun to give and be creative :)

One thing my sister has done with her kids that I think is brilliant is when it comes to Halloween Candy. She trades them 50 peices each for a toy they want (last year was zuzu pets, I think this year was Monster High doll each.) This way they consume less candy and her husband gets guilt free Candy. (He has to eat 3500 calories a day to maintain 153 lbs.. the jerk!)

I really tried for this as well. It took 4 years for Mathilda to start asking for Barbies and what not. This year on her list is 'resting Barbie' (wtf that is idek), camping Barbie, a dump truck and a magnifying glass to look at bugs. Oh, and a 'Nerf gun bigger than Daddy's so I can shoot him in the face'. O.o

We do try to make things as well, she makes all of the wrapping paper using potato stamps and stuff and we make popcorn garland. But ya, you cannot escape sally prissy pants. :(

Maybe this makes me an ass but I'd rather have one thing I really want/need from a store than some random thing someone makes. I'm at a point where I have enough stuff, sentimental and non. I don't need another piece of my sister's handmade jewelry or yet another knitted scarf or something scrapbooky. I appreciate and love the sentiment but I really need a new cell phone and a restaurant gift certificate is a much-needed date , given that I haven't had income to do anything frivilous (even dollar movies, which really hurts the pride ( ... )

I'm glad I'm not the only adult who wants an ant farm lol. ThinkGeek has this really cool one that I've been lusting after.

I don't really get the whole Black Friday craziness either. I went to Target today for a couple things, but I waited until noon so most of the insanity would be over.
