I think he has a fighting chance of figuring himself out, anyway. They've really only just started - before season six, only his and Sam's very closest friends considered that what they might want out of life was in any way relevant, and a lot of people grimly opposed the idea that they were allowed to want things at all. Self-discovery is hard work, and I'm not surprised they're still floundering a little at the moment. Really, they'd better get renewed. There's just no way they can wrap this character arc up in what's left of the season.
And on another note - did you get my email? I'm not trying to hurry you or anything, I'm just having a little paranoid moment because I know the first one I tried to send didn't work, and I am uncertain as to the fate of the second.
They just HAVE to get an 8th season (-and a 9th and a 10th and... well...), because I would not want Dean to die (i.e. the show to end) before he knew who he was. Or before I knew. That was probably the only time when I was furious with Bobby, when he told Dean in the van that as hunter he was no person. That is Dean's problem already, and I think he just needs to become a person to get a grip on his life again! Grrrrrrr, Bobby....
And yes, I got your mail! Sorry, I should have sent a short note as you were worried already. :-( And I am wildly working on an answer!

I have mixed feelings about Bobby's speech. I'd agree 'you're not a person' was the wrong thing to say - but 'find your reason' was the right thing to say. That is what Dean has to do: find out why he does what he does and what he wants out of life and embrace it. Bobby tends to get shouty when he's scared, and he had a good reason to be scared for Dean at that point. It's like his 'family is supposed to make you miserable' speech in Lucifer Rising - I can see what he was aiming for, but I'd question the value of the actual words that came out of his mouth. At least I know he means well. Now Eliot Ness? He can take his uninformed opinions and go jump in a lake. :)
Oh, I'm glad you got it. There was no reason you should know to respond - I was just being silly, because the first one refused to send. I do look forward to hearing what you have to say, though. :)

I think that was one of the hardest scenes ever in the show for me. In part because in that moment, for Dean, I knew it was true. And, at that point, it was true for me as well in my own existence. I sobbed for the both of us. Still hurts me to watch that scene.
We've talked about this a bit on my journal, but at this point I don't think he's so much dead as numb. He's simply going through the motions. Not because he doesn't want things to be better, just he doesn't have faith it ever can be.
I love that you were encouraged to do this for yourself. *Hugs*
