Douchey Moments in History

Welcome to another edition of Douchey Moments in History!

"This is my... Luke Snyder"
This is only a minorly douchey moment, in the sense of it not being outright mean or cruel or anything, but IMO it really illustrates something about Noah's character. Luke had moments earlier stood up to Noah's father and declared that he loved Noah. When Noah ( Read more... )

You know. I have to commend you for watching these clips and pulling them all together...

...and still being able to put forth a logical and thoughtful analysis.

When I watch these bits again, all I can think is "NOAH WHY ARE YOU SUCH A DOUCHENOZZLE HOW COULD PEOPLE ROOT FOR YOU WHEN YOU TREATED LUKE LIKE FRESH DOG SHIT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN YOU ARE NOT A SPECIAL AND UNIQUE FUCKING SNOWFLAKE YOU'RE JUST AN ASSHOLE RAGERAGERAGE."

So. I thank you for being levelheaded about it.

Well, thanks! Even though I'm spending a lot of time wanting to reach through my computer monitor to throttle Noah, I'm actually having fun putting these clips together. I've said this to a few other people, but I guess it's kind of like they say in the song What is This Feeling? from Wicked:

There's a strange exhilaration
In such total detestation
It's so pure, so strong!

I doubt I'd feel this way if Luke had actually ended up getting back together with Noah, but knowing that they were NOT together and never will be again does make it kind of fun for me to go back and re-watch all the reasons they could never be right for each other.

Agreed! It's like I get rage blackouts after watching one or two of these clips. Sometimes I have to wait a while to post a coherent response, because if not it would just be a senseless mix of anger and curse words.

this is definitely a case of Noah thinking only about himself and what he wants without any consideration for the people whose lives might be disrupted (or possibly ruined) just to make him feel better about himself.

Totally! It really is striking to see the clips on the heels of each other, and looking back with a more critical eye.

Gee, why does that sound familiar? Wasn't there someone else fairly recently who acted like a total asshat, later admitted he'd been acting that way, but never actually apologized? Who could I be thinking of?)

Mmm. Who could it be??

And the fact that Noah kept pressing the idea and laying on a guilt trip until he got Luke to agree to go along with it, despite the fact that the idea was clearly distressing to Luke, just makes it that much douchier.

The thing that makes it extra crispy douchey for me is that Luke and Noah could not get married themselves, and watching Noah, all smiles, marry a woman, was just extra salt in the wound. And how the Snyders were almost acting like it was a real wedding ( ... )

And how the Snyders were almost acting like it was a real wedding day. Gah.I get why the fact that they can't legally get married themselves might make it worse for you, but that part doesn't really bother me. I mean, I just think of it like, if Luke was a girl and Noah was his boyfriend... or if they lived in Canada or Spain or something, where they could get legally married ... and the rest of the story was all the same, I can't imagine I'd be any less pissed off at Noah for doing it. But the way Luke's whole family seemed to be celebrating it like it was a real marriage? That was all kinds of fucked up. I could see them all acting that way if they had been doing the big public wedding and reception kind of thing, to put on a show for the government, but with the small, private wedding at the farm, and just family at the "reception", there shouldn' ( ... )

Oh, me neither. But the fact that Luke can't get married to the person he loves was an extra cherry on top of the suck sundae.

The big deal they made about making sure Ameera had a pretty dress, and that they had the right kinds of food for a traditional Iranian wedding and all that junk really did make me a little sick.

That's the thing -- everyone's going out of their way, acting like it's Ameera's actual wedding day, while Luke is just standing there hurting.

they make me wonder if the writers actually thought what Noah was doing was something good and noble and wonderful, and/or that Luke was being petty to feel upset about it.

I think they totally intended for Noah to come across as a noble hero, absolutely.

Like asking someone to go in the closet and keep his most important relationship a secret from the world is all just fine and dandy?

Sure would explain a LOT, wouldn't it?

I think that is probably the biggest reason of all why I hate Noah so much. I mean, if he was supposed to be a scumbag, then it might have been fun watching him be a scumbag. But the impression I get that Noah was supposed to come across as this great guy was was all kinds of sweet and wonderful and was such a good boyfriend, when he was actually coming across as a scumbag, just makes me hate him even more.

And once Luke and Noah started actually having sex, didn't Luke want to move in together, but Noah decided he didn't want to anymore? From what I remember, Luke kind of just assumed they would move into an apartment together, and Noah got angry. I'd have to re-watch it.

Noah didn't want Luke to move in because Luke just wasn't morally grounded enough to live with him. He was still recovering from being a bad person. He was amazingly lucky that Noah would once again actually take him back after such misbehavior ( ... )

What I keep noticing is when people talk about Noah's clear childish behavior, they always have to find an excuse.

You're not going to get that here! Here, we see the truth of things: there is no excuse for Noah's behavior; he acted that way because he was a douche!

It is true that, if I knew nothing else about Noah, and just watched the few clips surrounding any one time he acted like such an asshole, I could probably accept the excuses given by his apologists. But when you see how frequently Noah's behavior requires an apology, it becomes harder and harder to end the statement that starts with, "he only acted that way because..." with anything other than, "he's a total douche!"

I really hope you include the moment where he introduces Luke as his "special friend" to Ameera. It's totally normal for men in the Middle East to act that way. There are no PDAs between men and women, but between two men, it's normal. They hug and kiss in greeting and hold hands and link arms. There is no way in hell a sheltered Iraqi woman would have understood.

the scene doesn't have any "Wow, douche" moments the very first time it aired. But looking back... holy crap passive aggressive much?
"I don't think that's the best place for you right now" ....I don't even know what to say to that. He wants to live in dorms. It's not like he's...I don't know, joining the army.
1:48 "Fine, just, do what you want to do." *eyeroll + annoyed*. Ugh.
3:33 "If that's not what you want, then..." He's so irritating in this scene.

Yeah, Noah really could be a passive-aggressive, manipulative asshole, couldn't he? And yet, I get the impression that the writers really believed they had created this nice boy who was a great boyfriend. It's like there was this huge cognitive dissonance between the Noah they envisioned in their heads and the one they actually delivered to us on our TV (or computer) screens.

When it's about him (Mason, Ameera), doing something illegal is okay. Otherwise, when your boyfriend does something that's not even technically illegal (just against school policy) it's never right. That's the ( ... )
