Part 1 |
Part 2 “How can the curse be broken?”
Kyuhyun looked intently into his hyung’s eyes, waiting for an answer while Sungmin only stared back at him, blinking.
“Are you saying that in a serious manner?”
“Yeah…”
“But this curse is not just a prank or anything humorous that can be considered as a laughing matter, Kyuhyun. This is not fairytale.”
“Are you sure it’s not a fairytale?”
Sungmin tilted his head.
“Why, do you think a kiss would break this spell?”
“I was kind of hoping you would say that….”
And then Kyuhyun saw Sungmin raise his eyebrow.
“…because that’s easy.” Kyuhyun averted his gaze to prevent looking back to Sungmin who was still looking at him. But when he looked back to his hyung, Sungmin was already in a deep thought.
“Thinking about it, I was brought here for a reason and that’s you,” Kyuhyun said in a serious tone.
Sungmin took a deep breath and sighed.
“Okay. You see, news had spread before that your great grandfather was able to discover something that can emit light without using any source of energy. It didn’t need any electricity or fire to create light. It was a special kind of element that he discovered accidentally. And so the King wanted me to pair up with your great grandfather and create this magical constellation orb so we can create artificial stars.”
[Artificial stars…?] Then Kyuhyun remembered something. He looked around the room and went to the dresser. He opened the drawer and took out the parchments he found earlier that day.
“Was this the blueprint?”
Sungmin took the parchments and laid them on the floor, enough for the moonlight to shine on it. And there it was….the illustrations he made centuries ago. Everything they needed was written there. All they needed was the materials to produce it.
“So, we just need to do all of this for the curse to be broken?” Kyuhyun asked as he let his eyes run to the illustrations on the floor.
“Technically, yes.”
“Okay, then I’ll do this.”
“Are you sure?”
“I want to help you.”
“But why…?”
“For a change, I want it to be me to help someone.”
Sungmin smiled weakly at Kyuhyun. He was suppose to say something more about the invention but decided against it. Maybe he’ll say what it is when it’s done.
--------------------------------
First, they decided to build the exterior of the plan.
Kyuhyun looked at the garage next day to see if there are any scrap metals and tools he can use for the invention. Luckily, Ryeowook and Yesung don’t bother checking that place. Also, there were sheets and pieces of metal he can use to make a globe. The tools were also available there. Problem was, he can’t bring these at the attic. He looked around the garage to see compute everything in his mind. Then he sighed as he realize he have to do the dirty work right on that location.
On the first night, Kyuhyun waited for Sungmin to change in the attic again.
“Kyuhyun. It’s nice to see you again,” Sungmin smiled.
“I brought books for you to not get bored.”
“Are you going away?”
“I have to go downstairs. That’s the only place I can work. It’s too… cramped and flammable in here.”
“Oh… b-but I want to help.”
“I can’t really risk letting other people see you. Okay? I’ll just be downstairs and I will be back later.”
Kyuhyun left the light open and left the room. After an hour, as he welded to make globe out of metals, he felt someone was staring at him. He lifted up his welding helmet and was surprised
“Hyung, don’t be like that! You scared me.”
“I’m sorry,” Sungmin apologized as he stepped into the light, “I just want to take a look.”
“But you can’t turn back into a mannequin in here.”
“I promise to go back before the sunrise sets in. Just let me stay?”
Kyuhyun smiled and then took something from the table behind him.
“I think you need to wear this.”
Sungmin happily accepted the welding helmet and watched Kyuhyun do his work.
“Have you ever showed your real human self to someone before?” Kyuhyun asked as sparklers flew in the air as he welded.
“No, you were the first one. I only became human again on the night you arrived here.”
“Really?” Kyuhyun asked as he lifted his head gear again.
“I also don’t know why,” Sungmin confirmed.
As Kyuhyun lowered his headgear, he snickered to himself.
[Maybe we’re destined.]
“What’s funny?”
“Oh nothing.”
--------------------------------
Every night, as they both work on at the metallic globe of constellations at the garage, Kyuhyun and Sungmin slowly learn things about each other.
The metallic globe was now done. It height was as high as Kyuhyun’s waist and the diameter was around 30’’. Now all that’s needed is to use a marker to draw the constellations so Kyuhyun will know where the holes is supposed to be. Kyuhyun drew at one side while Sungmin did the opposite side.
“How come you know how to do technical things?”
“I used to study Engineering while I was in college. “
“College… I assume that is where you master your craft?”
“Something like that, yes. I didn’t get to finish though.”
“Why?”
“Health condition. Living alone and the pressures in the University were too much. Also everyone’s always worried about me.”
“You’re sick?”
“A bit. But I’ll be fine. I just have a weak heart.”
“Oh…”
“How about you? What happened with this invention? How come you guys never got to finish it?”
“Uhm…”
“But then again I remember Ryeowook hyung saying something that someone stopped the invention. Was that you..?”
“Kyuhyun?”
Kyuhyun and Sungmin immediately turned around and saw Ryeowook at the garage door.
“Why are you still up? What is it that you’re doing there?” then Ryeowook saw Sungmin, “Oh, you have a friend. You have been keeping things from us, no wonder you sleep early”
“Hyung, I swear this is nothing and- wait, what?”
“I wouldn’t stop you from meeting someone, why didn’t you introduce him to us?” Ryeowook giggled.
Sungmin immediately stood up and bowed.
“I am sorry to intrude.”
Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. [I don’t think he literally meant you as my friend…]
Kyuhyun only then noticed that the sky was already starting to lighten up. He immediately stood up and went to the door.
“Hyung, let’s talk later we’re discussing something important.”
“Kyuhyun, you don’t have to hide you know, you can invite him inside an…..” Ryeowook’s jaw suddenly dropped.
Sungmin who was standing near them had turned solid. Kyuhyun immediately turned around and caught Sungmin before he fell to the floor at the last minute.
Kyuhyun raised his head to look at Ryeowook who didn’t move at all.
“Well… this is awkward,” Kyuhyun bit his lip.
------------------
“I have been living with a live mannequin for years?!”
Ryeowook had been walking in circles while Kyuhyun took a sip of his tea inside the kitchen. Sungmin was safely tucked inside the garage.
“He’s been here for centuries actually. But he only became alive when I came here.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“So why were at the garage?”
“It’s because I have to do this invention that would bring him back to normal.”
“That story was true?”
“Apparently.”
Ryeowook sighed deeply.
“Please don’t faint.”
------------------
That night, Ryeowook and Yesung were by Kyuhyun’s side as they waited for Sungmin to turn into human.
“I think this is crazy,” Yesung suddenly blurted.
“I saw him with my own eyes,” Ryeowook justified.
“Hyung, I think he can see us.”
“You’re being silly, Kyuhyun.”
The grandfather clocked had struck to midnight. As it made a sound, Sungmin who was a mannequin, had turned human right in front of their very eyes.
“Yes, I can see you,” was the first line Sungmin said to them while smiling.
------------------
When the metallic globe was done, all that’s needs was a big round flask that can hold the chemical inside. As Kyuhyun looked at the formula of the chemicals before he went to sleep, he didn’t expect to recognize needed elements.
[NaCl, NaBr, KCl, KBr… and alkaline solution? Isn’t this…]
Kyuhyun just realized Sungmin was keeping something from him.
------------------
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sungmin was surprised to see Kyuhyun a bit pissed.
“I beg your pardon?”
“This,” Kyuhyun threw the illustrations on the floor at the attic, “This is the composition for a luminol. Don’t tell me the reason you stopped this before was because it uses blood!”
Sungmin didn’t move and only looked at Kyuhyun.
“This is the way to break the curse isn’t it? For you to use your own blood.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”
“Sungmin hyung… the globe that we made needs at least 8 cups of blood to make it glow. If we take that enough blood from you, you might die.”
“I know.”
“THEN WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?!”
When Kyuhyun suddenly clutched his chest, Sungmin immediately went to his side.
Kyuhyun was starting to have hard time breathing. He was trying to control his emotions but he started to feel that everything was becoming too much to bear.
“Kyuhyun are you okay?”
“I-I came here to have a new life. “
Memories kept on flashing into Kyuhyun’s mind. The withdrawal of his scholarship because of his health condition, his parents having a divorce because having a sick kid was too emotional for them, his weak heart, those painful checkups that never seem to end and now… Sungmin.
“Why does everything keeps on falling apart?”
Sungmin brushed Kyuhyun’s hair away from his face but he was surprised when he felt his dongsaeng’s tears fall on his hand.
“What’s the sense of breaking the curse if you have to die anyway?”
Sungmin suddenly felt guilty.
He should have stopped Kyuhyun in the first place but seeing how the kid was so happy in helping him, he can’t say no.
“You know, you’re like your grandfather.”
“Why, is it because he was weak too he allowed you to be cursed?”
“No, because he was the one who also hated the fact that I have to sacrifice myself just for the king when he knew he would be killed the instant he stops it.”
“He did that?”
“He didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”
Kyuhyun wiped his eyes, took a deep breath and smiled at Sungmin.
“I’ll let you live, no matter what happens.”
------------------
One month after Kyuhyun found Sungmin at the attic, the moon was shining brightly again.
It was the perfect time to break Sungmin’s curse.
Ryeowook was the one who extracted blood from Sungmin that night. After taking 1500cc of blood from Sungmin, Ryeowook wrapped it up.
“Hold on, this isn’t enough.”
“Someone already offered to give the rest.”
“Is it ready?” Kyuhyun asked as he entered the living room.
“Kyuhyun, tell me you didn’t off-“ Sungmin got dizzy as he tried standing up.
“Whoa, you okay, hyung?”
Sungmin glared at Kyuhyun with one eye. He was feeling really weak. But he was worried about Kyuhyun’s condition. His dongsaeng could’ve had a heart attack from losing that blood.
“Don’t worry, I made sure he was fine when I took it from him,” Ryeowook reassured.
Sungmin covered his eyes with his hand as he laid down on the couch.
He can’t stop grinning even when tears try to fall from his eyes.
------------------
“Ready?” Kyuhyun asked.
Sungmin, Ryeowook and Yesung all nodded in agreement.
Beneath the moonlit sky, Kyuhyun gave the other bottle of blood to Sungmin and they poured it inside the large round flask. Once the blood creeped into the luminol chemical, the part it started to touch started glowing immediately. Once all the blood was in, Kyuhyun and Sungmin carried the flask inside the metallic globe. After waiting for mere minutes, light started emitting from the holes that signified as the constellations.
Suddenly the whole metallic orb glowed so brightly.
“I-is this the reaction we’re supposed to get?”
Sungmin smiled and held Kyuhyun’s hand tightly.
“Yes.”
The light started to get stronger and stronger. Then Kyuhyun started to hear a boiling sound inside the orb.
“I think it’s about to explode…”
He looked at Sungmin who was just looking at him, smiling.
Even when they heard the blast, they didn’t look away from one another.
------------------
“Try pressing the red button.”
Sungmin was in the living room with Kyuhyun, playing with the remote. He pressed the red button and the TV turned on.
“Whoa, moving pictures!”
“Now if you want to change that, just press the numbers and it will lead you to different channels.”
“This era is so astonishing…”
Kyuhyun can’t help but stare at his hyung who was so hooked into pressing different channels at the TV. When he looked by the window, he saw it was raining. Then he heard the TV was turned off.
“What happened?”
“Kyuhyun, what if, what if all of this was just a dream.”
“What do you mean?”
“What if this was still part of your dream?”
“Then I would do this.”
Kyuhyun moved closer to Sungmin and kissed him.
“Okay...then what if it wasn’t a dream?”
Kyuhyun stood up and pulled Sungmin’s hand.
“Where are we going?”
“To my room.”
“How come?”
Kyuhyun just winked.
