Same as it ever was...

Typical -  routine - manageable - all things I long for in my days right now.

My mother-in-law was admitted to the hospital last Monday with a UTI - those things do quite a number on old people. She couldn't stand and bear her own weight, and was confused beyond her already confuse-inducing dementia, so the facility sent her via ambulance. She's 87 ( Read more... )

I hope they can make her comfortable. It's insult to injury for her and the family to go through this.

Hope you can have your getaway!

Honestly, she really is quite comfortable - we got to see the doctor during rounds this a.m. and she was very positive; we may not know for another day or so, but no matter what, they've started her on the treatment in order to potentially nip it in the bud.

Wow, life has been full on for you! I hope things slow down a little. Really glad you got at least time to spend with your boys. I think it's testament to you guys as awesome people and great parents that they want to do things as a family. I really hope for such a good relationship when ours are that age.

I don't know that we were great parents, but we did the best we could and it's not possible to do any more than that, right? I credit a lot of it to family meals, corny as that sounds. We never let life (ours or theirs) get so crazy or overbooked that we didn't have time for a sit-down dinner most evenings. It's nothing to write home about at the time, but looking back, I think that's one of the best things we did. One activity per kid at a time; no zipping around from this to that to th'other thing.

Yep, all of that sounds pretty sensible to me :)

I'm sorry about your MIL and the impact it has had on the whole family. I'm glad they are taking good care of her, and let's hope she hasn't caught that infection!

You are a good organiser to have that family day together (with the co-operation of your boys, too). I hope you two get the break you deserve in a few weeks!

And man you have been busy.

Thanks - the weather was unfortunately uncooperative that day, but everyone still wanted to go, and so we did it and enjoyed it.

Sorry you are having to deal with all this, and so cool yr kids still like to hang out with you & hub!!

Stories like the one you just told about yr MIL make me want to drive down to the local 7/11 and buy a carton of Camel Wides, frankly. (I loved smoking and health concerns weren't the reason I gave it up. I just couldn't justify the expense.) What is the point in living to 87 years old in a Home, w/only limited use of yr intellectual capacities and in flickering health? I remember that yr own parents are in their 80s and doing quite well. But I'm thinking they're the exception to the rule (though I'm too lazy to look up the stats.)

The difference between my folks and my MIL is night and day. She gave up her independence willingly and let her brain and her body go dormant as well. Her life as an oldster could've been vastly different had she chosen for it to be. My folks (dad 91, mom 80) still drive, cook, play cards, and fight to keep themselves active and healthy ( ... )

I always love to hear from you - sorry your MIL is under the weather right now.

I am currently doing that little bit at a time cleaning... you are so right. Stuff amasses at a frightening rate. :)

Letchworth State Park is beautiful. What a great family outing.

Have fun in Massachusetts.

The one woman's house is lovely, but EVERY SINGLE CUPBOARD AND DRAWER is filled to overflowing with papers that need to be gone through. It's exhausting. Her finished basement is sort of like a hoarder's storage unit in places. I guess people don't expect "someday" to get here as quickly as it does.
