PS3 Update #3 - Prince of Persia

Dec 23, 2008 12:02

So it was with no small amount of trepidation that I picked up my controller and navigated my way through the opening moments of the latest installment of my FAVORITE GAME SERIES EVER - the new PoP by Ubisoft-Montreal.  My expectations were so high... would I be disappointed by a pile of crap? Short Answer - no, the game's great.

Sure is good to hear that the new installment is a good one. I have all of the games but haven't found any of the more recent versions to hold a candle to the first game and the fun I had playing it.

Perhaps my incoming Best Buy gift cards will be spent on this.

I was a HUGE HUGE fan of the last 3 POP installments... So totally looking forward to this one.

Ironically, my boss at work (whose fiance works for Ubisoft) just HANDED me a copy of it 5 minutes before I read your post. As a Christmas gift. How nice!

The reviews have been pretty good. Mostly saying it's NOT the old game, but it's different in a good way, if not a bit on the easy side...

I'm actually HAPPY about the less-combat part. That just got very annoying in the last one... I enjoyed more the "puzzle" of figuring out how to get through the rooms...

Anyway, thanks for the review! See you this weekend, Noel!

Probably the complaint about the game you are most likely to hear often is that it is too easy. I found the game play very satisfying and fun, but if you are looking for a real challange, you not going to find it.

I didn't mention it but most reviews have: you can not actually die in the game. Anytime something bad happens to you, Elika saves you. This may make take too much of the challange out of the game for some serious gamers.

Personally I have a very low frustration threshold for having to replay the same level 20 times to get through it. Games that make you do that I get bored with and never finish. I liked the fact that you can probably get through most levels on your first or second try and definitely on our third.

Indeed... We've talked about that same low threshold for frustrating parts of the game... I've had games that have gone back into the GameFly wrapper less than 5 minutes after opening it... I do like SOME challenge, but everyone has their own threshold...

I saw a preview/interview with the developers and they were talking about the aspect where Elika brings you back to the last "real ground" you were on and they were really grilling the developer about it... Saying that it seemed like a cop out... Probably because their testers REALLY got tired of trying to make impossible jumps and figgering out where to go next...

I LOVE the feature and it is what I was referring to regarding reload times. The practical effect is that there are no reload times. If you miss a jump you are basically teleported back to the ledge you jumped from or very nearby. I don't necessarily mind having to try a jump 4 or 5 times to get it right, I do mind having to wait 60-90 seconds inbetween each attempt. Those wait times can really add up over the course of game until you end up spending more time wait for reloads than playing. And really this isn't all that different than the rewind time feature of Sands of Time, it's just automatic.

I've been trying down to narrow what game would I put on my Christmas list.

I was pondering the off-roading game PURE (cause it looked fun)

And the new PoP for the same reason.

Good to hear that the latter is a solid option.
