Black Tuesday (1954) starts with a jailbreak and ends with a tense blood-drenched siege. Edward G. Robinson in top form in a grim brutal hard-hitting but excellent movie with some film noir flavour (and a definite noir look).

The Last Seduction (1994), one of the great neo-noir/erotic thrillers with Linda Fiorentino magnificent as a perpetually horny femme fatale super-bitch who rips off her loser dope dealer husband. She has further wickedness planned. Very film noir.

Black Angel (1946), a slightly underrated film noir based on a Cornell Woolrich story. A woman tries to prove her husband's innocence. Dan Duryea is menacing and self-pitying. Peter Lorre in top form. Lots of Woolrichian twistedness. Good movie.

The Long Wait is a 1954 film noir Mickey Spillane adaptation but not a Mike Hammer film. An amnesiac had no idea he was wanted for murder. Has a whole raft of femmes fatales, existentialist angst, corruption, lots of sexual tension. Great stuff.

Vice Squad is a 1953 police procedural (not a film noir) with Edward G. Robinson as a cop who is perhaps in danger of being morally compromised by his ruthless methods. A bank robbery ends in a hostage drama. Flawed but interesting.

Nightmare is a fine 1956 film noir based on a Cornell Woolrich story. A jazz musician has a nightmare about killing a man in a mirrored room. Is it possible he really did kill him? Lots of half-baked Freudianism which I always love.

Whistle Stop is a 1946 film noir starring George Raft and Ava Gardner. Very underrated.  A film that doesn't go where you think it's going. Ava had gone to Chicago to find glamour, excitement and money. Now she's come back to the loser she loves. Excellent movie.

Hold Back Tomorrow (1955) is a film noir about a man about to be hanged. He makes a last request - a woman for the night. He gets a down-on-her-luck whore named Dora (Cleo Moore). Somehow this film managed to satisfy the Hays Code. Cleo Moore is superb. Great movie.

Outside the Wall (1950) is a solid film noir. Richard Basehart is a man who's spent 15 years in prison and finds life on the outside scary. He has trouble with dames and a chance encounter from the past drags him into noir nightmare world.
