This is my favorite story of the week! A group calling itself the "Christian Civil Liberties Union" (hyuk hyuk hyuk) is suing the city of West Bend, Wisconsin, for the "the right to publicly burn or destroy by another means" the library’s copy of Francesca Lia Block's young adult novel Baby Be-Bop. My first thought, of course, is that anyone who doesn't realize the kind of unsavory associations they're facing by advocating the burning of books deserves all the ridicule they get.

My second thought is that it's kind of quaint that people are so upset about a book. When you consider the wealth of unwholesome information available on the Internet, it's almost a touching testimony to the lingering power of the printed word. Treasure these moral outrages; we will not see many of them again.

My third thought is that I can't seem to find a Web site for the Christian Civil Liberties Union. I found a phone number for an American Christian Civil Liberties Union in Olathe, Kansas, but nothing for this Milwaukee outfit. That makes me suspicious.

Your second thought is a nice one, but the complainants are dessicated old vampires that are at least 300 years old, so they may not even be aware of the filth available to them on the library computers.

A salon article on this also calls the CCLU "shadowy."

I thought you were supposed to buy your own books for burning. Though I guess that sort of negates the point.

Attorney Mary Schanning to impanel a grand jury to examine whether the book should be declared obscene and making it available a hate crime.

AHAHAHAHAHAHHA.
