Ficlet: Autumn Leaves

Feb 11, 2011 01:52

So, it kind of bugged me that in a story about June and her past (wherein she was an active part in Byron and Ford's games) she was pretty much passive while Neal 'rescued' her. So I wrote a coda.

Title: Autumn Leaves

I LOVE this - I love how smart she is, and how she can look at others (and herself) with equal parts practical no-b.s. realism and kind understanding. great comments on her portrayal in the ep too.

Yay, thank you!

The thing that the writers keep saying but failing to back up is that June's as a much a con as Neal. But with and extra 50 years experience. And it bugs me, because as a con, she should be a lot less helpless than they keep making her. So yeah, she knows what's what, even if she kind of slipped up this time.

That's such a great point - and like Neal, she's brilliant but can be played by those who represent a life she used to lead (like Kate or Ford).

Exactly. And she probably misses Byron like anything. And then there's Ford, and it's just. Yeah, I can see her getting screwed, but more because she's wilfully blind to it than because she doesn't get it.

Thank you! I love June, and I wish they'd show us the moxie they keep telling us she's got.

This was perfect. I, too, was annoyed by how absent June was for most of the story and how Neal seemed to think he had to protect her from what was going on. I really wish she'd kicked his ass for it at the end. But this almost makes up for that disappointment! It's perfect. And I adore the idea of June and Mozzie as partners in crime (with mimosas and Parcheesi, of course!).

Eee, thank you! Yeah, they should have given her something. The comment I made above was that the writers keep saying but failing to back up that June's as a much a con as Neal. But with an extra 50 years experience. And it bugs me, because as a con, she should be a lot less helpless than they keep making her. So yeah, she knows what's what, even if she kind of slipped up this time.

Absolutely, mimosas and Parcheesi! Also, I find myself increasingly inclined to ship Mozzie and June. :oD

Thank you! I rather love June, and I am a bit annoyed that the writers keep making her the damsel for Neal to save.
