We bought a house about 2 years ago inside of the Alta boundaries. I send my 6yo DD to private school, but we wanted a good choice to send her to in case anything ever happened and we had to pull her out ( ... )

Wow, so much info! Thanks so much! :D

Yeah, I'm so glad we're not in Utah county. Eek. And at this point I'm not overly concerned with the best possible education I can get, I just want a nice school that will be comfortable for me for the last 2 years. I can't imagine that Jordan is that bad, education-wise, but I'll check out those links and see.

I'm not sure that high school exists anywhere on the planet. By definition its supposed to be a miserable experience that motivates you to go do something awesome. Its the kids who have a great time in high school who never do anything great later.

I have to agree that anything is better than Utah County. I grew up in Pleasant Grove and I could count the (openly) non-Mormon kids on one hand. A lot of non-Mo's would actually take Seminary classes because everyone else did....

Anyway, back to the subject at hand; Two of my very best non-lds friends moved from Cali to Utah in HS and went to Alta. They were skiers so maybe they met a diverse group of people outside of school but both of them really had a great school experience there. Hopefully you get things figured out. Wherever you go just bring the diversity with you :) Maybe Alta could use some kids who are not so Mo to teach them about the real world heh.

The best I can give you... is that I dated someone from Jordan High School when I was in high school (I went to Copper Hills) and neither of us are Mormon, nor were any of our friends from both schools. I knew three people from Alta only one was Mormon. So I'm guessing you'll probably find there are less Mormony people at both schools than you thought.

Brighton isn't too far out of those boundaries either, what about that school?

You know, I gotta tell you, high school is pretty irrelevant. I went to several, and, well, having experienced the broad scope of them, it really just doesn't matter. How you approach things is critical. The building? Not so much. You're going to a middle-class suburban high school in a conservative state, either way. So you'll get a pretty good white-bread education and move on to bigger and better things.

Well, I partially agree with hotpanfrances, but you don't want to be attacked... right? Are you in a minority group of any sort? For instance, are you gay? Then it would be much more important to consider how safe your school is.

The only thing that I can give you is that I went to a fundie Christian (not mormon) middle school and most of the people who then went on to public school went to Alta (despite the fact that it's pretty far from Summit County). I visited Jordan myself for a competition and it seemed fairly diverse. But, hey, I don't know very much about either school.

However, I do know that West High School is supposedly the most diverse school in SLC. I had a friend who went there and she did meet a wide array of people there. Is that a possibility at all? It's also a magnet school and offers an IB program if you want to do that.

Oh, and this might sound weird, but for the sutherland institute site, you might want to ignore the environment aspect. It seems that the more diverse a school is, the more conflicts it has and the less funding it has. Think about it this way: Park City High has one of the highest environment scores. Yet it is extremely segregated between the whites and latinos, and it contains almost no other minorities. It is also very classist. (However, it is quite liberal towards queer folk, non-mormons [actually, mormons are made fun of in PCHS], and people who are politically liberal.) The high environment ranking comes from the fact that they can afford resources. That is good and bad. On one hand, you do have those resources. On the other hand, the wealthiest communities also tend to be the least diverse ones ( ... )

Yeah, I'm certainly not expecting the most amazing school, but if Jordan is less Mormon than Alta I kinda wanna go for that.

Oh no, I'm a straight white female. But the funny thing is, I think I'd be more comfortable around iffy, questionable characters than perfect Mormon kids. Just because I'm not Mormon and never really have been, conciously, and it's just really not my group.

I kinda wish there was a website that showed the actual religious demographics and not just white/black/mexican. That would be interesting. But it would be harder because there would be a lot of jack-Mo's that would say they're Mormon even though they're really not, and stuff like that.
