I've decided that after too many long boring evenings, and the prospect of too many more to come, I could do with some sort of entertainment.
Having never previously owned any game consoles, or even been much of a gamer (beyond what was available on the Mac in the mid 90s - so Prince of Persia, the Marathon trilogy, and a whole lot of SimCity), ( Read more... )

"But is it a good time to buy? Are prices about to drop for Christmas? What games should I get, and where's cheap for 'em?"

Honestly? Right now is an odd time to buy a video-game system. You can get a PS2 or a Gamecube for ridiculously cheap, pick up all the best games and still have enough left over to buy... well... some of the shit games too. But buying an Xbox 360, Wii or the like will set you back shit-loads and there's nothing worth playing,

To be fair you can't go wrong with a DS Lite. Get Animal Crossing Wild World, Advance Wars DS, New Super Mario Bros. and Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. Either that or a PlayStation 2, Guitar Hero, Eyetoy, Silent Hill 2 and Devil May Cry 3: special edition.

I'm defintely after something portable - being away from home a lot dictates that bit... I'm just being a stingy Scotsman and looking for a good deal.

But maybe I ought to consider something for home too...

Since Nintendo released the DS Lite back in June there is unlikely to be a price drop for forever. It's certainly something enjoyable to have. PS2s won't drop in price proper until at least March or maybe just before when the PS3 comes out.

The Wii is coming out in December and that thing is so small(size of two DVD cases more or less) that you can carry it about with you. The controller looks like a TV remote in a good way and the games will be cool.

But yeah, get a DS Lite, Animal Crossing, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Centre and New Super Mario Bros and you'll have lots of fun with varied game play.

Or you can do what I did and buy a flash cart and pass through device and download your games. Ahem I mean use it for homebrew.

Everyone I know who has a DS is addicted to Animal Crossing. I bumped into Darren on the way into work the other day and the first thing he said was "I've got a peach!".

I don't think I'm going to buy Animal Crossing today, but I'm suspect I'll succumb sooner or later...
