I am one of -those- geeks, but the movie totally rocked my socks. I love it to bits.

Eh, I have to completely disagree with you on the AU thing. The characters even SAY they're now in an alternate timeline (I think it's Uhura). Right on the bridge. Literally. You can interpret that quote from the website however you want, but I think it's pretty hard to argue with a direct, unedited quote from the movie itself.

Plus, the fact that the mirror/"evil" universe is accessed multiple times in canon and progresses independently of the 'original' universe (time passes, things happen, etc) shows that multiple universes/timelines can and do coexist in the setting.

The thing is that I don't have any problem with that whatsoever. I liked the film; there were some really big plot problems but their edges were blunted. I hate the hell out of Zachary Quinto but I loved Nimoy. Chekov was fun, Uhura was hot, Kirk was very Kirky. heh.
