Rome Day Two

May 28, 2005 19:16

Today started bright and early at 7:30 with breakfast in the hotel. Then I had a music lecture from 8:15 until about 9:45. During the 45 minutes that they gave us before we had to be ready to go to visit the Roman churches in the more central area of the city of Rome, I went to find a bus ticket and a map ( Read more... )

"From there we walked to the Piazzo Navona, which was built originally for chariot races. In the center of the piazzo stands an obelisk which was given as a gift from Cleopatra to Rome. The architect Bernini created the fountain (called the Four River Fountain) at the base of the obelisk. Behind this obelisk is the St. Agnes church which had something to do with converting pagans to Christianity (it was hard to hear my art history professor at this point because the piazzo was loud)."

It is SUPER weird to read about this, because I just finished (as in, today) reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown (author of da Vinci Code), and Piazzo Navona and that fountain and obelisk feature heavily in the book, as well as the rest of Rome, and Vatican City. (Lots of art history, and a really good story). If you haven't read it, you definitely should because 1) it is awesome, and 2) you are there right now and could go to all the places in the book. Get it and read it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Hope you are having a fantastic time!

Thats the first thing that came to my mind when I read that paragraph too! I just read that book 2 weeks ago, and I wish I had told you earlier to read it before going to Rome. The entire plot revolves around the Vatican and Rome, and it's a great book. I'm sure even if you read it now, you'll most certainly enjoy it!
Anyways, its great to read about your days and adventures (the bus thing sounds like something I am very capable of doing myself) and I'm upset you haven't written in a while. Keep writing!
