Done.

My schedule was free tonight, and I didn't feel like hanging around home, so I spent my evening eating dinner, visiting, and generally being the dutiful family member with my grandmother and her friend Stan. For the most part, it was good-- I always enjoy when people make me dinner, and I'm just starting to learn to sew, so my grandma let me fuck ( Read more... )

I actually thought your grandmother was kind of funny. To me her viewpoints were coming from her perseption of female persecution and of overpopulation respectively. Granted I'm completely ignorant of your Grandmother and heck, with your family in general but I've got inlaws from Kentucky that make feeble attempts once in awhile to get along with me so....

I think you're right-- I think her viewpoints do come from a certain perception of relevant world problems and what persecution is. Still... *shudders* I think I could just pass her ideas off as funny and quaint if I didn't see how they have been, at least in some measure, passed on to my mother, and if I didn't cringe at the thought that some of those viewpoints were ultimately passed on to me.

What baffles me is that even with these viewpoints, my grandmother managed to live in Los Angeles for 20 years. How'd she do that?!?!

Theres the part of active and passive racism, and the human mind having an amazing ability to not always follow something out rationally.

Its the situation in which the caucasian tells their long time jewish financial advisor that jews are greedy, forgetting he is jewish and that you have never had any problems with him.

I see passive racism as the built up experiences from your childhood, influences and social circles that imprint in you all kinds of notions and ideas that you really don't act upon, but still keeps around in memory and might unfortunately appear on your tongue when out of lack of something to say, you attempt to say something as filler.

*nods*

I think you're right. I think a lot of people only define racism as what you call "active racism": they don't see themselves as racist because they don't react to people of other races with physical violence, use racial slurs, or discriminate in any other blatant way. This is a problem because "passive racism" affects the way they interact with others and, if they interact with kids, transmit their views to younger generations, and is a much larger cause of social injustice than "active racism."

We are actually in agreement, but I expressed myself rather poorly.

I apologise for that and my obligatory line of petty excuses follows:
it was like 2am or something, I was really tired, not totally sober, english isn't my native language, Tika was massaging my shoulders as I wrote, UFOs landed in my back garden (that is where the inspiration came from)

I agree its FAR too long ago since we chatted. I need to read up on your LJ too.
I just recently returned to LJ.

*laugh* It's all good. I don't think I expressed myself very well in my previous commment. And I didn't even have a hot girl massaging my shoulders when I wrote it. I wish I had... *pout*

Just recently returned? Where'd you go off to? I didn't really stay updated on my friends list while in Japan because it was too difficult.

Um... excuse me?

Isn't it a bit presumptuous for you to come into my journal without knowing me and imply that my objection to another person's views are in fact an objection to another person expressing her views?
