I went in to the local office for the first time today. Had a security briefing, met my new hire sponsor (who is one of the 4 members of my team), and started doing lots of onboarding stuff--forms, getting my laptop, etc. Everyone was super nice ( Read more... )

The VERY FIRST thing I did as soon as my new job's health insurance kicked in was to make an appointment and tell a real doctor a few things I no longer have to worry about getting denuked for admitting. Imagine my surprise upon learning that not everyone treats mental illness like a moral failure.

I still have a couple appointments to jump through before I can get medicated, and finding a therapist I like with decent availability is probably going to take a while, but 9 years in uniform have taught me to be really good at waiting, and at least I'm FINALLY doing something about it.

Anyway. That's an option now. Just saying.

That's not a bad point. I used to see a counselor and it really helped me (I had to give them access to the supposedly sealed records to get my nuke clearance). I do still have to maintain a secret clearance for my new job, but not TS, and I don't think it should be a problem if I need to clear my head a bit.

*nods* I agree, normal. I remember coming home from my first day as a production controller and flaking out on my flatmate's lap saying I couldn't do it. Any big shift in job will leave you floundering at first.

Thanks guys for the perspective. Sometimes the hardest part is feeling like I'm crazy and everyone else handles this stuff easily. Going to just try to relax and do my best and *try* not to freak out so much!
