THE GROUP
T-ara (also known as 티아라, Tiara--I was really confused about the English spelling for the longest time when I first got into them, like wtf was I supposed to write in my iTunes?) was originally slated as a 5-member girl group (with Ji-ae as the leader along with Jiwon, Eunjung, Hyomin, and Jiyeon) and released "Good Person" for the Korean drama Cinderella Man in April 2009. Then all of a sudden, shit hit the fan with Ji Ae and Jiwon declaring their withdrawal from the group in June 2009, delaying T-ara's official debut and pretty much fucking things up. Their reasons for leaving are stated as "differences in style," which isn't really all that hard to believe judging by, oh I dunno, concepts like Bo Peep Bo Peep and yayaya. Nevertheless, there have been rumors that Ji-ae's departure was heavily influenced by Jiwon herself, and Jiwon has supposedly felt a lot of regret about leaving the group as interpreted from her Cyworld/me2day posts. Back in February 2010 iirc, around T-ara's Breaking Heart repackage promotions, there was a lot of fusspuppetry about one of the ex-members' possible return to T-ara, but ofc nothing came about from that. Jiwon is supposedly trying to get into YG Entertainment, and is actually cast in a drama called "What's Up?" that is supposed to be the Korean version of Glee and is sponsored by YGE and features Big Bang's Daesung as well. She is supposedly no longer under T-ara's company, but Ji ae still is.
ANYWHOO, I DIGRESS AND NOGAF SRSLY. After Ji-ae and Jiwon left, Boram, Q-ri, and Soyeon were subsequently (and very quickly) added to T-ara, and the six-member group finally successfully debuted in late July 2009 with the single "Lies." They debuted through MBC's Radio Star talk show, which I thought was pretty cool, since most, if not all, idol groups debut on one of the weekly music programs. Their first performance of Lies was on Mnet's M! Countdown, from which they unfortunately received a lot of crap for their lipsynching. The members have stated that they were advised by the technical crew to do so because the show was filmed outside in a windy environment and acoustics are already horrible in large open areas like that, and really, wouldn't their company know this already? smh.
T-ara is under Core Contents Media, which is the main entertainment management label under Mnet Media, a media distributor powerhouse under the CJ Group, which is like one of the hugest companies in South Korea, right up there with Samsung, LG, etc. So you would think that having enormous financial backing like that would lead to better promotion, but no Mnet Media's promotional techniques still suck balls. My poor girls.
Nevertheless, T-ara started to gain popularity with their next single, "TTL (Time To Love)," a collaboration with their labelmate, Supernova. And then my bbs reached a new height of success and popularity with their first full-length album, Absolute First Album, released in December 2009. I think I will always be a little butthurt that "Bo Peep Bo Peep" was chosen as their main title track instead of "Like The First Time," because BPBP was just painful and full of secondhand embarrassment to me, but it did catapult them to the tier of top girl groups, and really, it's not much of a surprise given Korea's major boner for "cutesy" concepts. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THOUGH that CCM's CEO, Kim Kwang Soo, is pretty much responsible for all of those mortifying snowman/bovine/Christmas tree atrocities that the members were forced to wear SO IF THERE'S ANYONE TO BLAME, BLAME THAT INSANE BASTARD WITH HORRIFYING/BORDERLINE PEDOPHILIAC TASTE. Yes, bitterness is very attractive. T-ara won a bunch of mutizens with BPBP, their first and most notable one being on the New Year's Day Music Bank, and from then on 2010 was TIME FOR T-EHRUH YEAHHHHHH.
In February of that year, T-ara released their repackage album, Braking Heart /snickers, ok Breaking Heart, with their Britney Spears rehash, I Go Crazy Because Of You, as their main title track. After that, the group cruised along releasing their 4372857398479 versions of TTL; promoting their online shopping mall, T-aradotcom; having members star in various dramas; oh and did I mention Jiyeon's scandal as a child video stripper? Shit hit the fan once again, but CCM hushed it up real gewd by announcing a change in leadership and the addition of a new member. In July 2010, Boram was dubbed the third leader of T-ara, and Hwayoung was inducted into the family.
In late November, T-ara began promotions for their mini album, Temptastic, and CCM thought the formula they had used for BPBP/Like The First Time would prove successful once again, but the flopping that resulted was a very rude kick in the balls. "yayaya" is a horrible song, not to mention horribly offensive as a concept, so I have no idea what management was thinking, if they were thinking at all. If BPBP was secondhand embarrassment, yayaya was just a period of time that I'd like to permanently erase from my memory, not unlike the epilogue of the seventh Harry Potter book.
Let's stop with my tryhard, unsuccessful attempts at wit though, I'll just break it down for you. T-ara aren't that great at performing. Sometimes, they really suck at it. You can't really overlook that about them, but you can't help loving them nonetheless. They are adorable, and losery, and adorably losery, and are just normal girls looking to find their place in the crowded, competitive, and highly transient idol world. If you think about it, T-ara might be Mnet's first legit ~idol group~, so I don't think they were trained so thoroughly in the ways of idoldom, but they manage very well and they really try to improve, which makes them even more lovable. IDK THEY'RE JUST REALLY ENDEARING AND IT'S REALLY HARD TO RESIST LOVING THEM.
-
punkgesture (Oh, I would like to add, that while individually they might seem pretty average, I still think that if you give them a chance, they can still manage to prove themselves. They're hard-working, fun-loving girls, and hopefully you try looking at them past the negative stuff and the scandal, errm, well mostly that one scandal, LMAO, that surrounds them. As a group they really do complement each other very well, and like Hyomin once said on an episode of Hello Baby, T-ARA is ONE.
Also, their music is way more than the ones they promote, we promise ;~; -
