I'd like to find organic (if possible) starts for watermelon and cantaloupe, peas, scarlet runner beans, and corn in the east bay. I'd rather not drive more than 10 miles or so from San Lorenzo to get them, as I'm trying to grow my own food to reduce our footprint, but I'm having a hard time finding what I want in our nearby OSH and similar places ( Read more... )

Not sure (as I'm on the other side of the bay) but do you have a Summerwinds nearby? They usually have several organic starts at this time of year and carry organic seeds.

Seems not, but it's good to know it's there, for next time I wander by:

Thanks for your response, though. :)

The nearest one is in Berkeley, and I was hoping not to drive all the way to Berkeley if I could help it. It doesn't sound like far except that it really does burn a chunk of gas, and I have no errands to combine it with soon.

Those are all pretty easy to start. If you can't find any already going, just get seed and start them yourself.

I'm getting seed too, but we're having a late start on the garden, so I want a jump. I intend to plant six of a few major things, then seed, so we get one bean crop three or so weeks behind the rest, for instance.

Maybe I'll check out the Temescal one tomorrow, thanks. I was really hoping not to drive to Berkeley, just because I have no other reason to go in the near future, and I like to combine trips, but in San Lorenzo, it seems like my only options are hardware stores, with their limited range (all the zucchini and tomato I could ever want, if I don't want many varieties, and not much else). I'm also starting my own seeds, but wanted a two-week head start on some crops.
