Sadly, macports is the best there is on OSX in terms of a package manager for open source stuff.

I wonder though, if what you were infact looking for is: port install libsdl +no_x11

The +no_x11 thing is a variant (port variants libsdl). I'm not sure what's going on here though, because libsdl-framework has an x11 variant as well.

This is pretty much exactly the reason I switched from OS X to Debian. I wasn't using Final Cut or iMovie or Photoshop or Microsoft Office or OmniGraffle, but I was trying to use things like Python and Twisted, and I decided life was too short to use command-line packages on an OS without a decent command-line package-management tool.

I still miss iPhoto and iTunes, though.
