“Why should I?” Clint responded, causing Steve to blink at him in confusion. “Do I honestly have less freedom than you?”
“You can’t vote without Coulson’s permission.” Steve reminded, grunting an unexpected jab the unprotected flesh of his kidney. “All your personal finances are controlled by him.”
“So it’s like being married,” Clint said with a grin.
“You can’t get married without his permission.” Steve said, exasperation coloring his tone as he nearly took off Clint’s head with a well aimed punch.
“I still couldn't get married to the one person I'd want to marry, if I was free, according to the federal government." Clint muttered as he sidestepped the punch.

I love Thor's reaction, and the fact he'd give Natasha and Clint amnesty if they wanted to run off to Asgard. *G* (oh, the chaos they would wreak) The bit about Pepper was so sad, but it made the world real. I think you did a fantastic job showing modern-day slavery, how it would probably be regulated and controlled now.

The fact that Clint and Tasha--the two assassins, the infiltrators--are the ones owned. (And Natasha/Fury is TOTALLY okay, I think it was actually your fics that turned me on to that pairing...) And listening to Coulson! Because Coulson is boss and he will kick your ass. And bawww, Clint not being able to marry who he wants anyway. ;_;

I actually thought Thor's reaction would get the most 'huh?', so I had a valid reason ready to give for it, but now I am glad I don't have to because validation from the OP is like from the mouth of god, and have I said how happy I am that you liked this? Because I was terrified a bit worried I didn't get the spirit of the prompt. And I kinda was tempted to do a blurb of this in Asgard, but Natasha and Clint would be kicked out before the day was done, and we all know it.
I thought long and hard about the Pepper thing, probably more than I should have for a single line, but decided it would be the best. Because as much as the government regulates things, terrible things do happen (prime example, as a teacher, I can get away with saying some teachers do some very horrible things and it's not caught till it's way too late), and I wanted to show that with Pepper.
