Loki/Steve, 100 Years to Live. anonymous April 27 2012, 03:09:47 UTC
Loki contemplates the risk/reward factors of being in a dedicated relationship with a mortal.

+10 If you can somehow work it to where Loki has stayed with Steve through all the years of his life & his risk/reward scenario was just a trip down memory lane.

I'll award you the internet if you can also make it so Loki has a memento of Steve's that's everlasting; a child.

Please make this as angst-ridden as possible.

I read your prompt, wrote the fill, re-read the prompt, and realized I 1) didn't write from the requested POV, and 2) neglected most of the angst. For this I am very, very sorry. Maybe someone can fill it again with lots more angsty goodness!

Heimdall sees all things, in all places, at all times.

He witnesses a summer storm gathering over Asgard farms; the roaring snowbirds migrating through Jotunheim; events, both small and significant, unfolding four realms to the north and four realms to the south, and in Midgard, which lies in the center. He is gifted, too, with future-sight, and must turn away fortune-seekers (mothers and children, servants and kings) who wish to exploit his ability for their own benefit. Your road lies before you, and it twists and splits in many directions, he tells them. I cannot be a compass to guide the way. You must choose for yourself.Loki’s road is more tangled than most. It crests over mountains and droops into valleys; it ends at some points and circles in others, leaving him lost and frustrated. ( ( ... )

Loki withdrew when he learned Steve and Bruce would depart once the palace had been repaired, going so far as to vanish on the day of their egress. Because Steve Rogers’ road lay before him, and because Heimdall’s future-sight cannot be a compass, Steve left Asgard without the knowledge that Loki had, albeit reluctantly, grown to love him ( ... )

Faraway is the sound of the waterfall. It is wide and beautiful, and Loki stares into it as though hypnotized-but Heimdall knows it is not the waterfall that has captured Loki’s attention. He is thinking about his life before now, before he accepted a half-kingship and apportioned the throne with Thor ( ... )

This was beautiful and the contrast between Loki's path and "the road not taken" poem is lovely.
