Tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary at the library. I've got about 80 hours of sick and 80 hours of vacation time banked, so I must enjoy it enough to let those accumulate.

What I've read in the past year... )

Well, I wasn't a big fan of the movie, or any of Kubrick's works really, so take this with a grain of salt.

2001 made sense where the movie failed to do so, and thus was more enjoyable. The book had more going on, and you understood the whats and whys. 2001 the movie would have benefitted from a narrator.

There some slight factual differences between the two, for instance, the movie had them going to Jupiter, but the book has them going to Saturn by way of Jupiter.

When writing 2010, Clarke adopted the facts as set out in the movie, basically making it a sequel to the movie, rather than his book, which I think was a mistake.

I wouldn't recommend 2061 or 3001 to anyone, because they don't seem like anything more than milking the franchise. You get the feeling that Clarke had an idea for a non-2001 series story, but didn't want to spend the time fleshing it out, and ended up just tacking on a bit of the 2001 universe, making an unsatisfactory hybrid of the two.

But 2001 and 2010 are good reads.
