Yup. I understand that it's based on St. Valentine and all, but the contemporary holiday seems to have very little to do with the original event. Hence, arbitrary corporate appropriation to sell lots of candy and further corrupt the actual meaning of 'love'. Is that too cynical...?*

My belief is that the commercials for jewelry do more to corrupt the actual meaning of love than the St. Valentine holiday. In my opinion if diamonds are a girl's best friend, I have serious issues since i value relationships not shiny, sparkling jewelry made from goop. I think it has become very popular to say that St. Valentine's Day is a corporate holiday. I believe that St. Valentine's Day is still a day to celebrate the people in your life that matter to you. But different people celebrate St. Valentine's Day in different ways. Some people buy candy for their signifigant other and others just spend the day with their significant other. Does that make one person's love greater than the other? St. Valentine's Day is what you make it. Just as every other day is.

I definitely agree that everyone celebrates in their own way. I believe that as long as the love is real, it doesn't matter howw it's expressed, as long as it is expressed. Candy can be equally as important (or more!) than diamonds if the feeling behind it is pure. Personally, I've never really liked diamonds anyway. I think it's cool that if you squish a lump of coal really, really hard it turns into something shiny... but I honestly can't tell the difference betweena diamond and a piece of glass. Meh. Besides, you can eat candy. :)*
