Returned from trip
I just came back from a complicated California trip!
I started out by having a day in San Francisco, where we (me and the friends I was visiting) walked around and did touristy things down on the waterfront, walking from the hotel to fisherman's wharf and all the way to the ferry dock, and then taking the cable car back to the vicinity of our hotel ( Read more... ) -
Excitement before trip
So I'm going to miss a hurricane, Henri, which will arrive Sunday. So instead of working this morning, I helped with hurricane prep. We decided that the sick boat would rather ride out the storm on land.

On way to CA
Another parental visit. Bracketing it with fun and a different parental duty: helping ensconce Jocelyn in her dorm.
The fun is hanging out with friends in SF Saturday and a small square dance event on Sunday. Stupidly I'm flying to Sacramento because it would cost an extra $400 for the one way rental to drop off in Sacramento. However it turns out ( Read more... ) -
The boat is sick again
So we went (tried to) waterskiing yesterday. Ken got up, but it was a little slow, and after somewhat less than a mile it decided to just quit. Fortunately, he knew that when this kind of thing happens, you hang onto the rope, rather than letting go, so that the people in the boat can pull you to the boat, in case it never starts again. Adventure of the weekend
We went to Connecticut to visit a childhood friend of Ken's. He's a teacher at a private high school, where he teaches physics and theater. The excuse for the trip is that he has a pretty good theater set up with lights and backgrounds and so forth, and Jocelyn wants to try to make a professional looking demo reel of her circus skills. Bike ride yesterday
Beautiful day yesterday. Too windy to waterski, even though the boat is (mostly) repaired. Maybe I didn't blog about it being broken. A little while ago, it wouldn't start and we diagnosed some electrical problem. A few days later some more effort was put into this diagnosis, and corrosion was found. food porn
We have been getting bountiful harvest as previously pictured. Last night I made a casserole with our 8-ball squashes that was beautiful enough to take a picture.
Of course, the recipe was merely inspired by other recipes, so I wrote down what I actually did to the best of my memory.

"After" photo of my 8-ball squash
"Squash Parmesan" (like Eggplant Parm, which we also had in this meal.) I think I started with the Laurel's Kitchen recipe, but I don't really remember anymore. Anyway, it's the bake-only, no-fry version of eggplant parm. Each squash makes 2 stacks, takes about a stack and a half, or a stack and a (smaller) eggplant stack to make a meal.

1000 miles
I rode my thousandth mile for the year yesterday. This is quite late for me - usually it is in June. On the other hand I spent three prime bicycling weeks in California. I am spending more time working, and more of that time is scheduled so that when I do bicycle during the day it is sometimes limited to 45 minutes or even less, and then I only go ( Read more... ) -
Gardening!
We've been gardening again. Well, Ken has. He's growing 8-ball squashes for me (basically spherical zucchini), and butternut squashes, and basil, and tomatoes. Something started to eat the basil, but he put netting over it and that seems to have curtailed the consumption. Tomatoes not too happy with the inundation we've been having recently, ( Read more... )
