I was absent from my Spanish 2 class last Tuesday. When I returned on Thursday, I turned in my homework, but I didn't realize that there was a second part to it until today. When I got it back with the completion grade today, the professor had given written 100% on top. She didn't notice that I only did half of it ( Read more... )

It sounds like you both reached a consensus on the reality of the homework. If the second half was never observed, it never existed.

Your mom was never observed and never existed.

So sure, I did great on the part I submitted, but that wasn't the assignment. What do I do about telling the whole truth?

I admit that I lie to strangers when it's significantly more convenient for me and does not harm them. I have no moral issues with this practice, and I assume that my casual acquaintances lie to me all the time. But I really do strive for 100% honesty when interacting with people in my monkey sphere...

Thanks, sweetie. :)

There's one last possibility. Maybe the teacher let it go intentionally? If it's not a huge part of the grade and you're doing well enough then maybe you finally got a break on something?

Possible. I know sometimes when I'm grading homework I feel like being nice and letting things slide. Like another commenter said below, homework is mostly for the student to practice a skill, as opposed to something like a project or essay, which is to assess and gauge level of assessment (although sometimes homework can be a formative assessment in itself). I would let it go.
