Wednesday evening found Sam in the Southern Clinic, which wasn't an unusual occurrence. He knew that it was Dr. Magnus' regular shift and one of the easiest ways to hunt her down. He knew that she wouldn't mind if he dropped by her hut or found her in the council offices, but he liked catching her at work on the off chance she'd have enough from ( Read more... )

"Ah, Sam, come in," Helen said, waving him into the clinic. Sam was one of her favorite people on the island, actually, and a particularly bright pupil. She enjoyed working with him and teaching him what she knew and he always astounded her not only with his intelligence but with his sheer willingness to learn.

"Something I can help you with? You've not gotten yourself injured, have you?"

"Okay, that greeting speaks volumes about what you think of me," Sam said. Despite that, yes, it was technically a clinic he didn't think she had to jump to that conclusion right away. He wasn't that danger or accident prone.

"But I'm 100% whole with all my parts and blood still where they belong," he reassured her. Moving over to her he opened up his band and showed her nearly a dozen oranges, all carefully stitched up. They were all fairly well done, since Sam had eaten all the first ones he tried that he'd done poorly.

"Oh, that's brilliant work, Sam," Helen said, brightening a little when she saw the neat rows of stitches. "I'll have to let you stitch a live patient soon, just so you can get a feel for it. Well done!"

The praise was all genuine because Helen Magnus did not give praise lightly.

Sam beamed at the praise, glad that she thought he was doing well. Honestly, it had taken him a lot of practice to get these few oranges to look this good, but he figured even if he wasn't naturally gifted, so long as he could practice enough to get good, that counted.

"No offense to myself, but someone would have to be crazy or desperate to let me stitch them up instead of an actual doctor," Sam said. He knew which choice he'd take, if given one.

"Also, I, uh, I met someone from your world. Kate?"
