Sam wasn't sure what pistols at dawn was going to entail, but he was pretty sure it would not entail a duel. Ninety percent sure at least. Eighty percent sure if he was really, really low balling it. He was 100% sure though that it was going to require pistols and being up at dawn ( Read more... )

Except when she's been with Declan, Kate's up and out by dawn almost every day. At home, in Old City, she'll sleep in as long as she can get away with, but she's conditioned now to morning meetings. She also doesn't sleep well when she's alone on the island. Too much can change, too quickly. It's not safe.

It's also not something she wants Sam to know. He ran to Magnus over the bruises Aidan and she gave each other, and if he finds out she doesn't sleep, he'll go to Magnus with that too. So she shows up looking not quite awake, still finger-combing her hair back and twisting the sides up. Not so rough that she looks hungover, but like she just rolled out of bed.

"If you tell me you brought coffee, I might forget that I hate you," Kate says, and her voice sounds rough too. Sometimes, being as good a con artist as she is comes in handy.

"Sorry, you'll just have to keep hating me," Sam said with a bit of a shrug. He wasn't much of a coffee drinker, so bringing some hadn't really considered it.

"I do have guns and booze though, which I realize isn't the most awesome combination, but I figure that we won't be mixing the two, so it's okay."

After their time in the jungle, Sam wasn't going to dismiss Kate as someone who wouldn't take this seriously. She had taken their hike to the dinosaurs pretty seriously, and that was just walking through the jungle.

"Guns, coffee, alcohol, sex - two out of four gets you out of a beatdown," Kate says, rubs her eyes, then stretches her arms overhead and yawns. When she snaps her jaw shut, she shoots him a sharp smile. "Guns and alcohol are a terrible combination. You might shoot the bottle, and that would be a waste."

He already thinks she's reckless and wild. Why give him the real reason she takes the alcohol and puts it in the pack she's made and seals it? At least he won't miss her when she figures out a way out of here.

"Here." She holds out her hands for the guns when she stands again. "Let me see those." Hopefully he knows enough to keep the barrels down when he hands them over.

Yeah, at best Kate was ever going to get three out of four from him, and he knew where to get coffee. Lots of coffee if that was necessary. Not that he thought she really wanted to have sex with him.

Sam slung off his backpack and took out the guns. He knew enough to know that you were supposed to teach every gun as if it were loaded and never point it at anything you didn't intend to shoot. He handed them over to her one at a time; grip first, barrel pointed down.

"I have no idea how clean they are," Sam said with a shrug. "They've been down there for a while so they're probably pretty dusty."
