Lulz.

Feminist myth #1.

"men's rights", btw, usually signifies "men's rights to sexually harrass anyone they want to", or "men's rights to automatically override a woman's opinion, no matter what"

Yes I got hit with that in a srs internet argument.

Is this the part where I invite immolation by saying it serves you right for trying to have a serious argument about feminism?

I think I'm far more deserving of immolation, I'm the one arguing with a female-gender-identifying male-gendered goth feminist ;)

Ref. old, politically-incorrect joke about arguing on the internet & the Special Olympics :)

(Although if the collective wisdom of Google and Facebook is anything to go by these days, your adversary could almost be me).

when in arguments like that (especially if you just want to piss them off for the laughs) always remember to say "as a rule of thumb".

also, "female-gender-identifying male-gendered goth feminist".... that's a metric fuckload of issues packed into that statement. how the hell are they able to exist without bursting into flames of crazy?

Unfortunately it is somewhat true that in conversations about gender, whenever someone starts wailing WHAT ABOUT TEH MENZ?! that is in fact the subtext of their complaint.

Like all generalisations it is not Truth, but it is an applicable statement in certain contexts -- and all generalisations must be made and taken in context. It doesn't sound like you're talking to someone who cares a lot about context as regards generalisation though, so there you go.

Bringing the trans issue into it complicates things entirely, since you're dealing with someone who is attempting to either relinquish or seize male privilege, which is a reality. Many transpeople are far more militant about male privilege than cispeople because they have experienced it in varying ways from both sides.

In a related tangent, tonight I had an interesting conversation about straight people telling gay jokes, and then saying it's ok because I have gay friends to quash any complaint (even if the person complaining is gay). The truth is, it's only ok when the gay people ( ... )

I do agree about conversations _about_ feminism, but in this case, it started out as a rant about an abusive partner with a "I guess I need some vigorous feminist support, here" and the insinuation that all men are idiots. I voiced that I was uncomfortable with this, and that I failed to see how this was in any way sexist (or indeed feminist), as she needed therapist help more than feminist help, and instantly, I became the evil hated. :) So feeling very much the jerk aspect, despite me being told quite uncertainly that I was the jerk for being offended and uncomfortable. The loudest voice, and indeed the most strident attacker, was definitely the trans goth boy, and I got the definite impression he was "arguing on teh internets" because he'd not answer my questions, but constantly attack what I was saying, usually out of context ( ... )

You know, it really is sad, that when someone tries to stand up for mens rights, they're labeled a hater/ratbag/flamer/troll. The equality argument has failed here, and badly.

My problem is when they start spouting the 'Reverse Sexism' stuff, like it's OK if men are being discriminated against in certain situations because it's just women getting their own back. Just like 'reverse racism' where if it's discrimination against a white man, it's OK because the white man discriminated (and still does) against the non-white man for so long ( ... )
