Muslim leader wants elements of sharia in Australia

Ugh, from sauce here. Apparently this guy wants to implement that non-penal parts of the sharia law system as a parallel law system, like we already have for the aboriginal (and TI) peoples. Which I'd agree with... if it weren't for the fact that the sharia law system is stupidly and massively biased towards the male population ( Read more... )

Eh, I've been called racist for saying this, but if you wanna live in a country under Sharia law, go back to wherever you came from.

If I moved to, say, Lebanon and started insisting that they apply Commonwealth law, the least that would happen is I would be laughed at. If you move to a new country to live, learn the language and learn the law.

I fully agree with you here. Chakae pointed out this url: http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=4282

I love how they're all "but you've got your judeo christian law courts!" as if our laws are religious based instead of humanitarian based. Also, I love how they're trying to portray "4/10" as a significant number. Last I looked, 60% against was a pretty good sign that it wasn't wanted. I also wonder how many women were polled in this. Polled not in front of the men.

I actually agree with you there - I do not consider that as racist either. You go and make another county your home, you live by their laws, else stay where you are.

"This does not exist in Australian law but I do not believe it clashes fundamentally with Australian values or the Australian legal system."

I think it bloody does... How on earth does somebody think he can talk about taking away a very specific right and say it doesn't "fundamentally" clash? wth?

"Under sharia law, if a couple divorce and the mother remarries, her former husband has the right to decide whether the children will live with the new husband or not," Dr Matthews said."There is still a preference for the child to go with the mother, but the father has the ultimate decision ( ... )

nah, every time i apply logic to a situation, i apologise to reality. habit i got into at work because whenever logic is applied, the plant procedes to change reality on you. and that tends to piss people off.
