I'm not sure I agree with you on price. e.g. the rate is significantly cheaper than hiring from Europcar, even with their special offer on, so far as I can see from their website. I get a quote of about £77 for two days on an equivalent Golf, as opposed to the £55 for the week quoted in the article. Also, it looks like the locations are likely to be more convenient for most people.
Also, doing some maths, it's actually significantly cheaper than running my car for a year, even if I hire their car for all 52 weeks per year. Of course, they don't operate anywhere near me and there is a significant performance difference between my Subaru and their Golf.
It's a top idea (if the drop off point is near you).
If all I needed the car for was shopping/going to B&Q then it would probably suit me down to the ground, and save me a fortune. Alas my life is not that simple, and I'm pretty sure they don't operate in the old town of derby yet.
We occasionally hire a car and it would be handy to be able to use a car for a couple of hours to go to the garden centre etc.
I think these schemes are great for people living in London where the vast majority of people who work in central London do not drive to work (due to the prohibitive costs involved).
Rik could drive to work however, but I am not willing to fund a car for his benefit ;-)
Looking at the pricing this only seems worth it if you want the car for less than 5 hours. After that it's cheaper to just go to a regular hire place and get one for the day. (5 hours Streetcar Golf = £29.75, 24 hrs Enterprise Astra = £29.45). I would have thought that statistically most trips are less than 3 hrs so it would be worthwhile, though you'd want to go for a regular hire for longer journeys.

Not so cheap after all - it'd probably be cheaper to get a taxi to the nearest hire car place at that kind of rate.
