Eek!

I actually just got properly excited by a new supermarket opening near us. I terrify myself sometimes.

...although it is a Waitrose. Should we just file for bankruptcy now?

We live practically next door to one. I'd be interested to know what the fruit and vege is like at yours, as ours is truly terrible. Limp, bruised and elderly vege almost all the time.

I normally love Waitrose, but can't work out if it's our branch or it it's gone downhill.

We don't buy supermarket veg anyway, as just about all the supermarket veg everywhere is pretty grim, at least compared to what we can get from the local farm shops and garden centres.

Weird, our Somerfield is about to close and reopen as a Waitrose in a couple of weeks. With this we get inflated prices and shorter opening hours (Somerfield's 10:00 close was a godsend) however we'll probably still use it for odds and sods and try to avoid the lovely fattening stuff* due to it being the only place within walking distance.

*Yeah, right.

That's funny, the Waitrose opening near us was a Somerfield. I wonder if there's been a buyout?

I used to work opposite a Waitrose, and it's not been fattening stuff I've missed: it's been things like the fresh fish and good quality olives and sun dried tomatoes.

Yes, the Co-op bought Somerfield some time ago, and weren't allowed to keep premises near existing stores for monopoly reasons (we have an existing co-op nearby, I guess you must too). They've been given some time to consolidate and are reaching the deadline to divest themselves of the places they can't keep - I guess Waitrose bought out several of these.

Christ, I bore even myself... :-)

That's really interesting actually - we do indeed have a local Co Op.

You know I'm glad you clarified that as I thought for a momment you were talking about the Aldi at the top of the village.

Hmmm... Waitrose... velvet_the_cat May 29 2009, 14:49:08 UTC
If you're getting a Waitrose, see if you can get Ocado deliveries too.

They claim to do a lot of Tesco 'price matching' and have some internet only offers on. Plus, once you've ordered a couple of times they get really desperate to get you to order again, so after a couple of weeks of no orders they'll start sending you discount codes.

We haven't used them since we left Brum, but they're now offering us £15 of a shop of min. £60.

If you don't mind planning ahead a bit and are happy to have the later delivery slots it's not so expensive. Plus there's less impulse buying than walking around an actual Waitrose store.

That kinda defeats the point then. *grin*

We've been in an Ocado delivery area for quite a while, but the couple of times I've tried to use it they've been out of stock for just about everything.

Dosn't have to bankrupt you if you shop with your brain and not stomach in gear. You could also try Ocado.

shop with your brain and not stomach in gear

I don't understand that concept.

Ocado never ever seems to have ANYTHING in stock.

Besides, the stuff I'd want from Waitrose would be stuff I'd like to see before I commit to (e.g. fresh fish).
