The bag was probably more comfortable. If she hates pushchairs you could try a sling, Mothercare sell some fairly mediocre ones along with the the Close which is great until they get too big, or you can get some good ones online. I swear by my Ellaroo wrap but I think it's probably too hippyfied for you.
Yup, what everyone else said - screw the people judging you.
It happens all the time - you're too far away from your toddler, you're letting him climb on something that's far too dangerous for one his age, or, horror of horrors (the checkout assistant in Somerfield was really quite upset) you have let your male child choose a pink £1 plastic flask when there was a blue one there.
I was occasionally known to put Mackenzie (when he was smaller) or Nathaniel in the laundry basket, with the clean/warm clothes, and carry them around the house in that :o)
