Hi, campers. Would those of you familiar with DVD recorders (standalone decks, or with VCRs) please offer some suggestions?

We have one now, from Go Video (VCR/DVD recorder combo), but my beauteous and oft-praised jungle_goddess has had trouble playing the DVDs in some of our players. I wondered which ones those of you who had investigated this thought had the ( Read more... )

Have you remembered to finalize the discs recorded on the GoVideo before trying to view them on other players? Another factor is the relative age of the devices on which you're trying to play the discs; many older (first or second generation) players simply don't recognize burned media, and will only play stamped (factory-pressed) discs.

For my money, the best place to look for comparisons and opinions on compatibility is VideoHelp.com. They have extensive user-submitted reports on (as of a minute and a half ago when I just took a look) over 7,500 models of player and nearly 900 recorders.

I second the comment about finalizing. I thought disks got finalized automatically at a certain point, but was mistaken, and thus sent Stephen a five-pack of MST3Ks which were useless to him.

DVD-Rs (instead of +Rs or the RWs), the single sided ones, is the burnable format with the best compatibility. Most of the name-brand ones I've tried (Sony, Verbatim) work well.

I have a Panasonic VHS / DVD / HD combo player. Normal speed discs seem to work fine, but high-speed copies sometimes botch on other players. I would try making copies at as slow of a speed as possible for best compatibility.

One thing I have noticed on discs that I have trouble with, is that I can copy the DVD to my HD with no problem. Reburning a disc with Nero (even at high-speed) solves compatibility problems, at least *here*. :)
