With increasing rates of youth suicide, who's to say that the fetus, if it could choose, would choose to live anyway? Sorry if that sounds a bit flippant, but for too many kids and adults life's not actually that great outside the womb.

While that argument doesn't of course wash with opponents of abortion, it is galling that in this country, at least, the majority of the so-called "pro-life" lobby doesn't give a crap about the child once it emerges from the womb -- it's only worthy of their attention as long as it's "unborn." Hence they are perfectly happy to bomb civilians, deny health care to children and their parents, send them off on ill-conceived war missions, and/or put them to death at state expense -- it's only fetuses (including lethally malformed fetuses that have no chance of surviving outside the womb) that come in for such tender care.
