What a great premise for a story! I always like to see J&E get together, but I'd sure rather see Jack leave it all behind than stay in Texas and get bashed. I can hardly wait to meet your OC, Joseph.

Here's hoping you'll present us with many chapters, and lots of twists and turns of plot, plus a reasonable amount of smex. Is it too early for you to reveal to us if you're going to be telling us about only Jack, or if you'll be looking in on Ennis, too?

There will definitely be smex, which I hope people will find hot rather than appalling (as it's not J/E), though I don't think Jack and Ennis will just vanish from each other's lives after 20 years. After all, Jack still loves him -- he's just decided not to get killed waiting for him. Not sure how many chapters there will be, as I already have a middle and end in mind, so we'll see where it leads... Happy new year, :-) L.

As difficult as it is, at least Jack is making the effort to get on with his life. Hopefully it will be a good decision that he left Childress behind. I hope he gets the happiness he deserves. I just wish it could be with Ennis...sorry, I had to get that in. ; )

Hi Debra,
I too am very sad that Jack and Ennis aren't together, but after pondering this story for so long, I've come away with the sense that Jack at least deserves to get his bell rung but good, since Ennis isn't coming around. Jack is definitely better off having left TX, though it might not seem that way for awhile as he's going through a dark phase. Lisa

i loved everything here: Every so often she'd look at him ... but she wasn't going to let it distract her. all of her thoughts in between were so wonderfully bittersweet..

and bobby! "promise you won't get mad" and "you're still my dad." that was awesome, i could feel the weight of the milkshake in his hand, and sense the reality of their conversation.

Thank you for reading! I wanted to show some distance between Jack and Bobby, but also that he's basically a decent kid who loves and respects his dad, LD be damned. A lot of stories seem to sensationalize Jack's final days in TX, and I wanted to take it in a different quieter direction.
Now RL has mellowed out from the too-busy holidays and I've started Ch. 3. I don't think Jack will spend too much time in Frederick, which I don't actually know but liked on Wikipedia. Basically, I am making a bunch of b/g stuff up! He's going through a bleak phase but is definitely on the road to something better -- at least I think so. And hopefully it won't be too freaky or people, as non J/E smex is involved...

Yes, thank goodness for the Internet, as I have always lived on the West Coast. I have decided that the best way to deal w/lifestyle questions I have no way of answering is just to make stuff up, as filtered through (limited) personal knowledge and conjecture. I'm glad you're in my corner with the non J/E smex! I don't want to upset anyone but am feeling a need for some myself -- hopefully my take will be hot not appalling and/or ludicrous.
