Title: Slipping Into Darkness... Ch. 5
Description: Canon AU beginning in 1983; Jack leaves Texas instead of dying.
Warnings: MO!Jack.  More Jack coping than just plain forgetting about Ennis, but this story includes an *explicit* non-J/E pairing, in this chapter.  Feel free to skip it if you hate that.

Slipping Into Darkness Chapter 5 bmshirts April 14 2008, 10:35:18 UTC
Hmmm. Maybe Jack would be better off sending another postcard to Ennis telling him to forget April or May. Maybe some other time, if Jack wasn't too busy! That ought to shake good old Ennis up some!! Not even caring enough to be there for Jack's surgery or to visit him in the hospital. Give me a break!! Why does Jack need a 'friend' like him? I think Ennis doesn't care as much for Jack as Jack always did for him.
Jack isn't that old. There are plenty of men who would be proud to have him in their life. And eventually, the desire for Ennis would become an ember, never to be fanned to flame again.
Thanks. Carole

I think you are being pretty hard on Ennis! Jack doesn't really know what's going on with him... But yes, It's too bad that Ennis hasn't volunteered to come down of his own accord. Thanks for reading!

Well, well ... shouldn´t they at least drain the Colorado river with another sexy shower? But I can understand this restless feeling - poor Jack.
"You hit things with your head a lot?" Ain´t that just the story of Jack´s life so far? And I think he´s entitled to beg for a little sympathy sometimes. Ennis letter pained me almost as much as it did Jack; it´s Ennis, so it might even mean oh it´s killing my I can´t be there for you, I want to hold your hand when you come out of surgery, I´ll meet you as soon as I can ever make it - but we´ll never know (or will we? maybe?).

Oh and *for all that he'd been born and raised in Texas, Joseph avoided that state's tendency towards fanciness* - hand to laugh cause I thought they sure looked pretty gay in Texas even if they were all homophobic assholes when I saw the movie ...

Hi Clara, Oh don't worry, I suspect there will be more bathing and showering off in their future, lol! And you're right, Jack is never quite where Ennis' head is at; he just has to go on past experience. Even if Ennis were beside himself, would he be able to put that in a card? Thank you for reading and commenting. :-)

I like your take on Jack moving on. It has a lot of reality feelings it. I think you have Jacks character nailed down pretty good.

Thanks for writing.

Great chapter. I feel bad for Jack, he is trying to find his way at this point in his life. Thank goodness for Bobby and Tyler, they seem to be the only good things in his life right now. after everything him and ennis have gone through, ennis could have shown more concern for Jack upcoming surgery.

Jack does have a lot of good (or, better) things going for him in my story -- I'm writing this in part b/c canon is so harsh towards him! His job is okay and he's surrounded by people who like him, or at least, aren't trying to do anything bad to him. It's true that he doesn't have the thing he's wanted most of all, which is Ennis...

Hey o2binla,
Wonderful update. Love reading how Jack is doing in this new life. Jack is going to have surgery and Ennis as usual too busy, he has to work. Glad at least that Jack got to spend Christmas with his son. Jack is trying to move on, but this line "a familiar achy restlessness was telling him to get out of there for now" shows his heart is not totally in it. Cant wait to read more.

Hi Jess, Thank you for reading! This Jack is definitely doing better than in the OS and the film, but he hasn't forgotten Ennis by any means. Ennis really does have to work, I think, but it's still unfortunate for Jack. I will update as soon as I can pull the next chapter together :-)
