Just wanted to say that I think you should (if you haven't already) read the novel, which might influence your thoughts about the role of the "extras" - in particular the children.
I haven't seen the movie, but I'm told that (perhaps inevitably) it lacks one of the key qualities of the novel, which is the characters' unspoken thoughts. Indeed much of what I enjoyed about the book takes place in the characters' imaginations.
There is also much to say about perspective, and again I wonder how successfully this could have been translated for the movie.
I guess these are fairly obvious things to say (and we've said them before about other book-to-movie adaptations) but they seem worth noting here, especially as you talk about some of the movie's aesthetic qualities.
