I was watching Dead Man's Chest tonight on USA, and it reminded me of an interesting find I made while researching for fic. One particular speech by Davy Jones has always stood out, to me. It has a particular rhythm and poetry that doesn't quite fit the rest of the dialogue. This is the passage where Jones first invokes the Kraken

I couldn't resist watching DMC on TV either, even though I own the darned DVD. The illusion of shared experience, I guess :-)

Shared experience, indeed. That movie gave me a very strange fic-dream. I just got up in the middle of the night to write it all down before I forget it. It'll be a separate post.

I saw this scene and the death of the Kraken as more of a symbolic moment, a passing on of the mysterious, the unknown. The edges of the maps filled in, the mystery removed. The New World, where one must find their place in it or perish.
There is an excellent interview with Ted and Terry in the May/June 2007 issue of creativescreenwriting magazine where they mention the passing of the Kraken as having a metaphorical meaning... "not only is it the end of era of piracy, but an end to all fantastical things. Krakens and mermaids, and sea goddesses, ghost ships, outrageous adventures on the high seas, and even characters like Barbossa and Captain Jack Sparrow."

I understand why they killed the Kraken. I just sort of wish it hadn't happened offscreen. But then the movie would've been another hour long. lol
It is a great scene, though. Probably has the most angst and gravity about it.
