it's the dimmer. our living room does the same thing.

i find it extremely distracting and spend a lot of time in the dark.

the guy we live with went out and bought a new switch at the dollar store. he could have just replaced the bulb with something that works in a dimmer switch, but instead, he bought a new switch at the dollar store.

i won't let him replace it. he told me he could do it without turning the power off.

Eh, switches are fairly cheap, so that wouldn't put me off. The fact that he'd do it without turning off the power sure does though!

haha and I was freaking out about not being able to shut down all the power to my apartment to change the thermostat. Someone doing a switch replacement with live wires sounds like a circus act!

It's the dimmer. My bathroom has 3 bulbs above the mirror, and oddly, they're on a dimmer (I know, in the bathroom?) and I just left incandescent in there when I switched out the rest of the bulbs in the house. Supposedly they are inventing CFLs that will work with dimmers, someday.

Well, but I've had CFLs work on dimmers before, only at full power.

Yah... they'll work on a dimmer, but (see above and below comments) standard CFLs aren't dimmable, so they need full power... fluorescent fixtures need DC to be dimmable. So I agree that swapping the dimmer with a switch is your best bet.

Yeah, they work, they just buzz. They kinda/sorta dim too, but with major buzzing. Which scared me so I decided to just go with incandescent.

Sorry I didn't introduce myself. I think I found you through the vegetarian community, but we seem to have a few other things in common, and I've found your comments interesting.

So, now you have a giant, chandelier-lit walk-in closet? Cool.

Another solution besides switching back to incandescents is dimable CFLs. They do exist, sadly they do not all work the same with all dimmers.Usually you want to get on and make sure that it works with your dimmer. Also of course they do not have the same dimming range as incandescents. They usually work in the top 50%-60% of the dimmer before they just go off.

I think swapping the switch is probably the easiest solution - I don't feel a need for a dimmer.

What? Are you nuts? What about those romantic moments rummaging through boxes?
