Hiroshima Bomb Memorial

August 6th and 9th are the memorial in Japan for the day when the A-bomb was dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Every year, I try to remember the lives that were lost during that time and I just wish that the whole world could live in world peace without war at all! Hiroshima was a very difficult place for me to go while I lived in Japan, but I knew I had to make the trip because I'm an American, a physicist, and a human being. The memorial is so devastating, stark, and honest. I found the city so strange because, as an outsider (in so many ways), I cannot help but always think of Hiroshima as a city that was destroyed with the atomic bomb. I can't help but think of only the destruction. It was difficult to see people so happy and the city thriving, because part of me could not help but think, "Don't you know the tragedy that happened here? How can you ever be happy?!" It was very difficult to try and see how Hiroshima rose into a beautiful city from the ash. It was hard to think about the fact that life went on and that, in many ways, the lesson of Hiroshima is not the horror but the triumph that came after. Hiroshima is really the dichotomy of the human condition, savage destruction and compassionate resilience. Yet, I could only see the savagery when I went. I can, to some extent, ( ... )

Yea, it seems hard to see survivors actually forgive the people that did a horrible thing to their city. They are strong resilient people!
