And I should live...?

Hello All,

I recently found out that I was admitted to Oberlin, and thus I have been scouring the website/wiki/blogs/livejournal pages ever since. I have read just about all that I have been able to find regarding residence halls, and I was hoping ye knowledgeable Obies could share your thoughts on the different dorms.

It seems like the freshman ( Read more... )

is there a punk scene at oberlin? and by that i mean, are there many/any punk bands and/or people who are into that kind of music?

are there any good music stores in town? i like stores that have used sections...is that asking too much?

I lived in Dascomb my first year, and it did tend to be pretty loud, though not to an extent that it really impeded my work, or anything. (Though I'm not one of those people who needs complete silence.) I met a few people there who I'm still friends with, but most of the people from my hall I don't talk to anymore. I think I did feel more comfortable living with all first years as opposed to with upperclassmen, though.

This year, I'm living in Asia House, which is really, really cool. I've made friends with a bunch of the first years, and I assume that's the sort of thing that happens every year. Asia House - and I assume Program Houses in general - is known for having a good community. So that might be the sort of thing you're looking for?

I don't have much to say about Fairkid, though.

Hopefully this made sense - if you have any questions, let me know.

I didn't live in first year housing my first year, though I did end up being friends with a lot of people who did. There were times I wished I had lived in dascomb or barrows, because it is incredibly easy to make a bunch of other first year friends if you do, but as long as you're willing to leave your traditional dorm room and talk to people it shouldn't be a problem. (okay, that is a lie. After res-ed screwed up and my roommate and I ended up getting moved into Talcott I never wanted to be in dascomb again.)

And yes, first year dorms do tend to be a bit louder/drunker/dirtier than other dorms, though I don't think to a point of being unbearably obnoxious. It's more the, er, fun kind of loud/drunk/dirty. :P But like I said, just because you don't live in Dascomb doesn't mean you can't go over there and meet people/hang out.

A word of warning, fairkid is fun, and can have great community, but it also has a higher than average amount of pot-smoking. Jusy fyi.

Barrows is great. It was not too loud. And if you like quiet and calm, barrows is right near the science library so you can just go there and study any time Barrows gets too loud.

I've heard that reslife can be a bit inconsistent when it comes to fulfilling housing requests. Do most new students who request freshman housing get it? I'm thinking I should be prepared to end up anywhere and be happy with it, just in case.

They try to satisfy as many as they can. You can also move, if you like, anytime during your first year.

Think about co-ops. Good communities.
